Air cleaner decal - 390 with Thermactor
« on: October 05, 2021, 10:26:22 PM »
Was the a decal on the side of the air cleaner  that had  a service part requirement, there seems to be several types which is correct for 67 San Jose built April 67 thermactor no air , dso 71
Also is there a proper 390 decal available for the chrome lid, I can find the right size, the all seem too big and hang over the profile in lid

Is your car a GT or non-GT? Lot of debate over the years on this subject and which air cleaners got used on which 390 Thermactor Mustangs

Yes I realize what the MPC says about the application but that does not match what I found on all unrestored examples back in the 70-80's. Not like guys were swapping one of the open style for the snorkel styles or even factory style ones at that time

Guess you already looked at the other threads on the subject (top and side decals) as well and the version discussion.

Guess your going with the dual screen with the breather nipple base?

Let me look through my pictures to see if there are any new (since we last discussed the subject) unrestored or period examples since then.

Look through pictures of other 67 S codes and on unrestored/original examples I see no evidence that they every received a cubic inch decal on the lid. No glue or wear patterns either. At least one of these examples is shown in the unrestored picture section of this site. Not the only Mustang this apparently happened on - just can't explain why.

As far as the reproduction likely IMHO something that Jim O started to fill a void and a want/need so he may have made something up to sell and their use continues to this day. He did a number of other incorrect for the application that also continue to this day. You will see them on cars around the internet and at shows

Here are just some of the examples I rounded up. Please ignore the owner/company added sticker and added breathing holes in a couple of them

Only have one example from a unrestored car I had back in the 80's but it came with a T Bird blue sticker on it.

As a side not I've got a handful (maybe a half dozen) Thermactor GT's with the snorkel style air cleaners but that is another subject. Maybe a supply thing - don't see a pattern yet

That would be my choice until someone comes up with some proof but would expect some push back and questions since this is not the norm (lack of a decal on the air cleaner lids)

As an aside helped out with a 67 390 (San Jose car) over a decade ago and we copied an original I had. It was odd but it carried the blue T bird decal. Car was shown a bunch of times - always gold except for the first time out. Owner and builder adjust some little details after the first but the use of the decal, though asked about, never received a deduction after an explanation and I would guess the benefit of the doubt. That is if judging is important to your final goal. Pictures of that air cleaner lid are posted in the earlier threads on the subject
