Fan shroud 1970 351C 4-spd
« on: October 01, 2021, 01:21:19 PM »
The car is a 70 Sportsroof, 351C 4v, 4 speed, no air or ps.

So a few months I discovered the fan shroud on my Mustang was cracked/broken into 3 pieces. I got online to attempt to find a replacement. Found what I thought was correct from John's Mustang. Labeled for 302/351 with 24" wide radiator. Labeled as original tooling, part #D0ZZ-8146-A, from Daniel Carpenter Mustang. Unfortunately I was dumb enough to throw away the old shroud before attempting the new shroud. The radiator isn't a Ford original, but the size (24" wide) is spot on.

So I put on the new shroud, the fan hits at the bottom. Top & sides seem to be okay, but it hits the 6 o'clock (well, from about 5 to 7) position. I noticed the fan was aftermarket, so sourced what I believe to be the correct fan for a '70 - 5 blades, stamped D0ZE-B, I believe. Roughly the same diameter as the previous fan. Still hits at the bottom.

So - do I have the correct shroud?? Should I get a shorter spacer to pull the fan all the way out of the shroud, or a deeper spacer to try and get it right on the radiator? Which would be a pain to put on, I can imagine.... Frustrating, because before there was no problem at all.

Any advice/thoughts appreciated.

Since its not a factory radiator and if you have already adjusted the shroud downward as much as possible I would consider making the holes for attaching the clips and in turn the mounting bolts for the shroud longer - more of a slot for adjustment purposes. Guessing you only looking for an additional 1/8"-1/4" on both sides

Could do the same with the shroud though I can't see how your is formed and if there is any impediments to doing that in the shaping of it

Just a thought

This may be way off but is there any chance it's because of motor mounts?

I don't think so. The previous shroud and fan had zero problem. Everything fit perfectly. The motor mounts, afaik, are basically original dimensions, if not original mounts (truly don't know/remember). I've had the car so long (40 years now), and it's been so long since I did the fan shroud (if ever!), I don't know what I had. All I know is that the current setup doesn't work. I've contemplated just cutting out/trimming the bottom of the shroud, since I'm not entering the car in any shows.

Of course we didn't know that and were only going through some of the possibilities of why things might not all be lining up

No disrespect intended....wasn't sure how to accent my statement to have the word "think" sound like "maybe - but it was okay before...but who knows?" Something along those lines.

I value everybody's inputs and time to help me. Apologies if I came across wrong; the challenge of the written word!

Just a learning lesson not to throw away old stuff until the new stuff is on!  ;)

Well at the very least your fan isn't correct. D0ZE-B would not be correct for 1970. A 1970 351C with a 24" radiator would have a C8SE-B fan. 17 1/2" diameter, I think the one you have may be slightly larger. And make sure the pads on the lower radiator mounts aren't swollen or the wrong thickness. Attached is a pic of the fan from my March DB built M code 70 mach with 3.50 gears, which got it a 24" radiator.

Thanks Carl! I'll see what I can do to source one.  Hopefully that'll be the solution.

This talk of fan shroud got me thinking   about the originallity of my car  . I looked at my fan and it reads cf DIDE  5600 BA .   SO this must be a 71 fan?  Its 17 inches in diameter.  I have a dearborn  car btw. non ac  car with a automatic . Knowing  what  was done to my car it dont surprise me on things lol..   It came from alabama  not sure how it got to wisconsin  . Mark
