Metuchen Engine Compartment Bolts finish and Manufacturer's ID
« on: September 18, 2021, 02:26:32 PM »
After reviewing the Dave Graham body assembly manual (also Jim's spreadsheets) for the following under the hood OEM bolts, I came to the conclusion that I have a number of incorrect bolts.

Listed in the assembly manual drawings:
382711-S2 Horns @ radiator support) 2 req.
57039-S2 Hood  latch bar / hood 2 req.
57039-S2 Hood 57039-S2 latch bracket top / radiator support 2 req
57039-S2 Hood 57039-S2 latch bracket bottom / radiator support 1 req
57041-S2 bracket assembly / body @ shock tower 12 reg.
57041-S2 Hood hinge / body 6 req.
57041-S2 radiator support center bracket top 2 req.

The common theme is all the bolts listed in the assembly manualare phosphate and oil finish.  The dimensions are the same with the exception of thread length variations of 3/4" or 1".  The horn bolts also have serrations on the lock washer.  It would be great if someone with original OEM bolts used at Metuchen around my build date can advise the IDs' for these.  AMK has some of these but they are zinc plated.  Does anyone know of reproductions of these P/N's with phosphate + oil?  Please feel free to provide corrections and comments to the above.  Any help is appreciated.  Alan

Assembly Manual 382711-S2 Horns @ radiator support) 2 req.  I found one of what appears to be a horn bolt (dimensionally correct) with a serrated washer in my bin of mustang bolts. It has a S39 zinc finish.  On the inside of the washer it has rust ~ 1/4 inch high and ~ 100 degrees around, so I would say it was horizontally mounted (like the horn assembly) Its interesting that it has a manufacturers ID of what appears to be an M with a vertical line thru it.  Alan

Assembly Manual 57041-S2 bracket assembly / body @ shock tower 12 reg. My original bolts are intact. I stripped the black off them and they are 57041-S39.  The manufacturers ID is a circle with ER in the middle.  I will re-plate these and use them.  Alan

Typically inserted (heads visible) on the engine compartment side like San Jose practiced while Dearborn did the reverse

Looking into (see if I have any good pictures) for some f the others you listed

Thanks Jeff,  For the six per side at the shock tower, the heads were on the inside of the engine compartment.
