1970 headliner install
« on: September 07, 2021, 04:28:26 PM »
Getting ready to install the headliner in my son's mach I. A few questions.. I understand the 70' has a glue-in front windshield, but will the headliner still wrap around both the front and rear roof edges under the glass?? Also, do the side panels get installed/added after the headliner is in place or is this done when the rear glass gasket is set??

Thanks for a reply!

My understanding is you do the headliner first, then install the sail panels, then the glass.

That is what I found works the best. Many will add the sail panel (fastback/sportroof)  last and it will droop and sag  especially along the top edge

Hey guys on my next question. Headliner install went pretty smooth. Getting closer to installing the back gasket and glass. I have purchased a set of sail panels and have them in place. I used glue to set them up at the top edge, rolled the headliner material over the lip and pinch welded, and glued in place for now. Is this correct? I assume that the back glass will roll over this headliner material as if it was on the top back facing roof line?

If I understand correctly you took the top edge of the sail panel material glued it to the inside surface of the pinch weld then wrapped it over and around the pinch weld and glued it on the top side of the pinch. If so you want to make sure that the "tail" of the material is not too long so that it reaches above the corner and be careful when you install the rear window and gasket so that your cord (guessing that is how you will do it ) is pulled in a direction that does not pull the gasket off of the body or roll it into the car.

Not too difficult but something to look for from my experiences doing these

As a first timer I trial fit the gasket as I wanted to get the look right at the top edge of the sail panel with the headliner and it helped with the sail panel set-up, as the gasket pulls the material tighter and changes its positioning. For example, I initially set my panels too high and when I installed the gasket, cardboard was being pushed up into it.

Thanks for the input guys. This will indeed be trial and error for me. I will definitely trim excess headliner material away from the pinch weld and pray it stays and doesn't roll  or get pulled back into the cabin area.

You'll be fine and once it's over you'll wonder what all the stress was about.  :) :) :)

Thx RocketScientist, you were right, just a lot of thought/worry for nothing. It went extremely well. The sail panels turned out nice with only a few small wrinkles here or there. Now the next issue is the attachments for the door-panel like clips on the sail panels. They went on fine but now have pulled away. Guess headliner glue and a support over the area to keep them in place should work? Never thought to re-glue them before install but then again this is repro stuff. Still, nice looking and they match the headliner.

The rear seal and glass went in without an issue, I mean no struggle. I am so far very pleased with the result and progress. I'll post some pics shortly.

What seal did you use? I have found the repos don't fit.

The rear seal was recently purchased through NPD. It snuggly fit around the glass and went in without too much pulling of the 1/4 nylon rope I used. Corners were the trickiest part. The seal seems to be of good quality. Time will tell..
