Topic: Rear Axles: Drilled Holes & ID #s ?

On the rear axle facings on my 1969 Mach 1, there are 3 drilled/punched holes.  The 2 outside holes are larger than the inside one.

Also in this area are alpha/numeric ID codes. The holes are partially overlaying these codes but it appears that they read;
C80W8D and C80W5D.

Can anyone tell me the significance of these holes and what the alpha/numeric sequence means ?

Looking at my axles (same as yours) I'm going to say the axle blank had the two outer holes drilled then chucked up in the lathe and center hole drilled by a center drill. It then would be turned around placed in a drive fixture and the axle was then machined to the finished size. This would be done so that the outside diameter ran concentric to the center drilled holes or perfect centerline of the axle. The numbers are probably an identification number.

Agree the number is a simply identifier for the producer of the axle and possibly for the end user
