tilt-away steering column
« on: July 20, 2021, 11:57:30 AM »
When I purchased my car, almost everything was there, BUT nothing was in place. Just lying in the car.  I am getting ready to install the reassemble/restored tilt-away steering, but need to know where everything goes. Is there a diagram of how this is assembled and where each component mounts on the body?

1. Wiring in the electrical assembly manual and shop manual and electrical service manual
2. Vacuum diagrams in chassis assembly manual as well as the vacuum service manual
3. Steering column in chassis assembly manual

There are some other tilt wheel service documents that should be in the library - if not let me know

The repair manual is repair-centric and does not show some of the installation details that I think the OP is looking for.  It is a good document for restoration.

What year are you asking about - this post should be moved out of general discussion.

From older posts it appears that the OP may be working on a 69 Shelby so will move this to the 69 Mustang section since they share the same details

You are correct that I am looking for the INSTALLATION side.  The column is fully restored. AND FYI, it is for a 69 Shelby.  Not sure of how different the 67 installation is, but it is a great article for reference.

Just received this diagram of the vacuum release valve. It appears that it mounts to the dash frame, BUT this diagram is for a 68 Cougar. for the 69 Mustang (Shelby), can anyone confirm that this is the correct mounting point for this valve?  Thank you.

The 68 tilt motor bracket is shaped different in 68 compared to 69 . The components are the same but the steel bracket is different. Jeff's picture is of the 69 bracket.

Thanks Jeff and Bob. hat is the unit that I have.  My question concerns where does this unit MOUNT in the car?  Dash frame, floor board, steering column, ?????  When I received the car, EVERYTHING was in boxes with  no reference as to where it goes on the vehicle.  The diagram posted is for a 68 Cougar.  I just need to know the correct mounting point for a 69 Shelby GT500.  Hopefully you can help.  And if there is a picture of this unit mounted in the car, that would be very beneficial.

That assembly mounts to the lower dash. I don't have a photo of the '69 installation but I suspect that like the '68 it is shown in great detail in the shop manual.
