Steering column bearing, non-tilt
« on: July 04, 2021, 10:10:29 AM »
Does anyone know where to obtain the correct steering column bearing for a 1967 non-tilt column.  I purchased all items to fully restore the column and also purchased this bearing
https://classicautomotiveltd.com/products/1964-1-2-1967-mustang-steering-column-tube-upper-bearing-daniel-carpenter?_pos=1&_sid=109a80373&_ss=r
This bearing measures 1 7/16" OD. and is too large to fit into the bore on the hub fitting.

I searched for some time yesterday I believe the correct part number is C4OZ-3517-A, no luck finding a source for this bearing.

I had previously purchased a steering column to convert our GT350 back to power steering and the only original part the column did not come with was the bearing. So I don't even have the original to repack.

Marty : For future reference for others, could you post a picture of the bearing, along with OD, ID, tyhickness, and any manufacturers markings. It may help others "down the road" since, for some reason, this isn't listed by any of the main Vendors.

Thanks,

Bob

The applications in the ad states - "64-66, early 67". No change over date for "early" is included.

That part number is the Ford service number shown in the 75 ed of Ford Car Parts (aka MPC). It is only used in 1967 for Mustangs and Fairlanes.
In the Mustang catalogs, there is a conspicuous "gap" for replacements, an indication that a source for this bearing is not known.
For future reference for others, could you post a picture of the bearing, along with OD, ID, thickness, and any manufacturers markings. It may help others "down the road" -
Good idea.

Thanks on the replies and dimensions.

After digging deeply through the garage attic this weekend I actually found a non-tilt 67 column with bearing intact which we most likely obtained (amongst other parts) when we purchased the GT350 back in the late 80s.  Now I just have to remove bearing clean, repack and install it in the column I restored.

Thanks
Carl

Marty : Thanks. What are the thicknesses (heights) of bearing and bushing ?

I don't personally need this info as I am changing from fixed to Tilt-awat, but haven't removed my fixed column yet, and may forget tto meaure everything when I do. I thought that since you already had a "loose" bearing, it would make sense to provide all the pertinent information we can in this thread, and in proximity to each.

Thanks again,

Bob
