Battery Tray Hardware

Looking to see what bolts (not just from the spreadsheet but actual pics) hold the battery tray in the car, particularly the ones on top that hold it to the inner fender that sit right below the battery. It?s for 66 Hertz but figured should be the same for all. Car was built around February of 66 as it was shipped to hertz in mid March.

What are you looking for, head marking? There's only one with a hex head and it is the same type and size as the fender bolts. The other is a carriage bolt, which typically did not have any marking on the head.

So there is a carriage bolt holding the battery tray to the inner fender?

Do you have a copy of the 65 Mustang Body Assembly Manual?
The manual is your friend. Use it.

There are 3 hex head bolts and the single carriage bolt with tapered end and square shoulder.


The lower part of the tray has j-clips attached to the tray. 


All this should be in the assembly manual.

ok thanks, I dont have a 66 assembly manual (yet) as it is technically not my car (yet, in many years from now).

Would they have used the bolts with the star washers or would they have used the bolts similar to the fender bolts with the serrated washer with the double tick marks?  I believe there is mix use during this timeframe

Yes and no. Ford replaced the external tooth lock washer bolts with the disc toothed type for the 1966 model, but required old inventory to be used first. That much is known. In San Jose, that change over was fairly well advanced by January 1, 1966. To see what type you need, you need to see what type is present. In other words, look - don't speculate. That also applies to head markings.

Yes it depended on which bolts your discussing. Both star and "flat" or round washers were used in the Jan-March  period

Challenge for battery tray hardware is that normally there is a battery mounted and in the way to see or if the car is disassembled the battery tray is removed

This leaves us with the majority of pictures showing the lower two bolt heads that were installed from the wheel well side of things

It appears from pictures of unrestored cars between the 6R16000's into the 6R190000's that the change from star to round washers took place in the early 6R190000 period
