You may think this is a duplicate, but it's not.
There are two threads about this but they are both about big blocks which have a shifter plate on the rear extension housing. The routing for small blocks is not the same since we don't have a forward hole that far forward into which we can put a harness clip.

Big block thread 1:
https://www.concoursmustang.com/forum/index.php?topic=4969.0
Big block thread 2: which answered the question for a BB, but the OP has a small block: https://www.concoursmustang.com/forum/index.php?topic=5432.0

So I'll remove my question from thread 1 and start this anew.

I'm in this shifter area. I have a new Ford reverse shifter switch. The assy manual shows a wiring clip mounted under the control's spacer (tube).

Attachment location of clip on a real part (main body) shown at tip of blue cap of pen in pic 1.
Placement of clip in assy manual shown near the purple line in pic 2.
Hopefully I got all of this right -- it's my interpretation of the assy manual.

Although the assy manual notes to use two clips I think this is for the 3 speed, not the 4 speed.

Where does a small block route the harness clips? How many?

Getting a little closer on this.

I rebuilt another shifter for a friend and it came with its original boot. I bolted its original back-up light on and noticed that there is no way the original (yep, his was original) wire retaining clip could go in the location the assy manual notes (on the shifter proper...see above). Since it's a small block it does not have the forward bolt on the shifter adapter plate.

Then another friend sent me a snippet from the Deadnutson site concerning their reproduced shifter wire clip:
* For 1967-1968 Mustang/Shelby, you will need 2 wire harnesses [ed. I think he meant 2 wire harness clips]. They get mounted into the first and last screw holes on the top of the transmission cover. They are installed with the bracket facing the top of the tunnel.

All applications for Mustang, Shelby, Cougar
1967-1968 289, 302, 390, 427, 428 3 & 4-speed (requires 2)
1969 200, 250, 302, 351W, 390 3-speed (requires 2)
1969 302, BOSS 302, 351W, 390 4-speed (requires 1)
1970 Mustangs 3-speed transmission (requires 1)

https://www.deadnutson.com/backup-wire-harness-retainer/

This is confusing as the FE installation notes 2 clips. One goes on the shifter adapter. Where goes the second?

Second, on the small block installation, what does first and last screws mean?

Resurrecting this thread.

Does anyone have any additional information on mounting and routing of the back-up light switch harness?

from DeadNutsOn listing for the clips
https://www.deadnutson.com/backup-wire-harness-retainer/

"* For 1967-1968 Mustang/Shelby, you will need 2 wire harnesses(as Bossbill noted typo should read as "clips"). They get mounted into the first and last screw holes on the top of the transmission cover. They are installed with the bracket facing the top of the tunnel."

yes these can be mounted on the trans cover, however I cannot tell from pic of clip if these can be mounted on the trans cover without any interference to the raised stamped details of the cover.  Also DeadNuts describes the mounting for 67-68 as if they are to stand upright off the transmission towards top of tunnel.

Also DeadNuts refers to a Firewall Clip
https://www.deadnutson.com/1967-70-firewall-wire-harness-clip/

I do not know of any flat headed stand-off on the firewall of a 67 to snap this over.  Is this correct for 67 and is there another way to mount this?  Also on a 67 where exactly on the firewall is this clip located?

To summarize info form DeadNuts website a 1967 used 2 of the Backup Wire Harness Retainers and one of the 1967-70 Firewall Wire Harness Clip.
