1966 6 Cyl Automatic driveshaft markings San Jose
« on: February 27, 2021, 01:33:35 AM »
Does anyone have a driveshaft from a build date of January 1966 San Jose 6 cylinder with C4 trans.

When I first began restoring my driveshaft years ago I didn't know about concours and sanded down all the rust to bare metal and erasing the paint markings.  Now that I'm into concours I would like to know which color stripes went into a San Jose Mustang.  I need the markings to be around Oct-Dec 1965.

Also which color codes will I need to use or do I mix paint.

I noticed that there is an A side and a B side on each end... which side goes to the transmission.

Thanks

Can confirm from two other 66 6 cylinder automatic equipped examples the similar location and coloring from my records and pictures

Are the green and white paint stripes on the A or B side.  I'm still wondering which side goes to the transmission yoke.  Also, are the stripes one inch in length

Stripes shown are at the rear of the driveline as installed. in the posted pictures above the third picture - the top would be towards the transmission and bottom to the rearend

Width of the stripes will vary slightly depending on how much paint was in the brush and how hard the worker pressed the bush (as it spread) against the tube. They often fall into the 3/4-1" range. Done free hand

Stripes are at the rear end - away from the transmission - closer to the rearend yoke. as shown in the first picture in reply #1

In my pictures there is an A side and a B side.  My drive shaft is bare metal without any markings so I don't know which side goes where.  My question is does it matter if either A or B side goes toward the transmission.

"Conventional wisdom" says the ends were interchangeable, at least for a 66 V8 Mustang. I've never had to have a drive shaft balanced so I can't say.

Rebalancing would not have anything to do with the end yokes but can agree that if the tube is the same diameter at both ends and with the same style of retainers they should be the same and the difference in the markings may be just different mold numbers.

I'm guessing based on looking at other 65-6 driveline yoke that there is another number on the other side not shown in each of the pictures. Likely that is the identification number

Have others (non 6 cylinder with letters shown like your but different ones so that does not help but it does suggest that the A and B are not connected to their orientation IMHO at this time
