Topic: Correct fuel pump for '66 289 2V

Hi guys.  I realize this topic has been discussed at length on a number of forums that I have visited but none seem to answer the question directly. So, I’m going to ask a simple question:  What fuel pump is correct for my ’66 289 2V (VIN 6R08C219472)?  At the MCA show in Oklahoma, the concours-trailered class judges deducted points for “incorrect fuel pump”.

I’m sure that is a legitimate deduction because the pump they judged came from one of the friendly on-line Mustang restoration parts vendors. (   I’m a newbie and didn’t know any better.) 

What I think I have learned from the various forums that I have been reading is the fuel pump should be a Ford Carter, that it should have a domed-shaped “thimble” on the top and should have a sealed bottom.

Is this information accurate?  If so, do you have any recommendations for finding a correct fuel pump? Unfortunately, the pump that was on the car before I began restoration seems to be one of the very few non-original parts on my family-owned-since-new Mustang.

It looks like this. The ones that had the CAR bura TER logo were the assemblyline variety in 1966.Bob

I'm afraid I already know the answer to this question:  can these be rebuilt?  I need to replace the pump on my '66 A-code.  It looks as though it still has the original with the thimble top.

Simple answer...YES.

The only person I have heard of or found is Fred Ballard, and he does them in groups.  When he gets a group of them together, he will make yours just like new.

It takes a while and you have to be patient.

Find him easy on the k-code forum.

You are lucky if you do!  These cores are kind of hard to find.  Most folks just tossed the originals in the trash and didn't realize they would ever be needed or wanted.

+1 On Fred rebuilding the pump.  He did mine and it looks just like new. Haven't installed it yet on the car but I hear they work great too.  But you do have to be patient with him.  He just finished a run back at the end of December.  I only had to wait a month but I think because I sent my pump at the end of him collecting the run.  Do a search on fuel pump rebuild on the other forum...

Thanks for the information.  I was able to contact Fred; he does not have enough pumps for another run yet.  I'll run a replacement for now and keep my core safe.
