65 Vacuum Advance
« on: January 22, 2021, 06:45:34 PM »
In an earlier discussion it was determined that the C5GF-12127-A FoMoCo stamped distributor would be the assembly line distributor for my car.  65 GT San Jose May 29,1965.  After a bit of research it seems the AUTOLITE stamped C5AZ-12370-A would be the correct vacuum advance unit for the FoMoCo C5GF-A distributor ?  Is that correct ?  No FoMoCo vacuum advance produced ?   Thanks for the help.  Brian

Brian,
In a word - yes. It is also identified as "Motorcraft DD-190", the service stock number for C5AZ-12370-A. It is RARE.
No FoMoCo vacuum advance produced ?
Yes. It was documented as an "engineering part number" which was used to buy, inspect and stock until it was used to make almost all the 64 thru 67 V8 distributors with a vacuum advance on the assembly line. The DD-190 and C5AZ-12370-A are service stock numbers for dealers' service departments to use as replacement parts. When they need to get new ones to put on the shelf (aka inventory) they used those numbers. Somewhere down the ordering chain, there would be a cross reference to use the engineering part number to manufacture new ones. That's the Ford system, which is similar to GM, Chrysler, the Federal Stock Number System, and even Home Depot to order new parts.

So the assembly line vacuum advance would have been a FoMoCo stamped unit.  Rare, hard to find and probably costly ?  The Motorcraft C5AZ-12307-A DD190 vacuum advance is also not so readily available and also relatively expensive.  Thank you.  Brian

No, not marked, at least the two used ones I have are not. The DD-190 I have on a C5GF-12127-A distributor is marked "Motorcraft", and that's about it. Remember, the distributor was completely assembled, calibrated on a test machine and then installed on a complete engine at the assembly plant.

The one you are looking for is either B9AF 12370-A or C5AZ-12370-A Autolite or Motorcraft DD190. Very correct looking units were made by AC, Purolator, Borg Warner and countless other companies back in the day. It's not uncommon to find new in the box units at far less than the Autolite or Motorcraft part sells for. The Motorcraft part is obviously incorrect for a 1960's car - it says Motorcraft across the bottom in the casting.

The B9AF part is marked Fomoco, the C5AZ is marked Autolite. Otherwise they are identical and interchangeable.

I was not sure of the early diaphragm's marking. The ones on my two "A" code Mustangs both say Motorcraft.

The 1965 Mustangs should have Fomoco marked vacuum advance as factory equipment. Motorcraft  did not exist until 1971 so if you see that you know it's not original.

I'm aware of that. I was looking for FOMOCO on the dioaphram, but obviously mine were replaced.

I don't recall ever seeing FoMoCo markings on original vacuum advance units.  Have an example?  I've only seen Autolite and Motorcraft.  Obviously, as stated, Motorcraft is a later replacement piece.

Charles I don't have an example to show photos of but from my experience I don't think Autolite parts showed up on these cars until maybe 1967 model year. Will check my OSI manual to see if it says anything about when the switch happened.

My OSI manual covers July 2 1966 - July 1 1969. The date on mine is January 1970, According to the Frontispiece the manual needed covers January 1, 1960 - July 1, 1967 and is publication number AF-7632-3 Volume 3 dated July 1967.

This makes sense considering the C5 part number assigned to the Autolite replacement part. The assignation of the part number does not necessarily mean any were made that year, only that the supplier switch and / or design changes had been approved.

That's an Autolite version - I think it would only be a likely assembly line candidate towards the end of 1966 or even mid - 1967 model year.
