Pace Car - Install or not Install
« on: February 01, 2011, 03:53:06 PM »
Working on a 64 1/2 Pace Car coupe.  The Car originally was given to Oakley Motors in Memphis, Tennessee.  I do not know if it was Checkered flag or Green Flag, I haven't gone through all the photos to check if they are in there.

Anyway, I have the original Oakley Motors placard that was screwed on the rear tailight panel of the car

I am debating on whether or not to re-install the emblem on the car.  The key with Pace Cars is that they are tied to the specific dealers through the promotion.  So this car will forever be tied to Oakley motors.  This of course means that I have to drill three holes in the tailight panel (or fake it).

Should I put it on there?

Attach some screw or rivet heads (whichever was originally used) via JB Weld and then tape the emblem to the rear.  That gives you the dealer logo without damaging the original sheet metal.

How about cutting out a magnetic piece to match the emblem?  Glue it to the emblem and it can be put on and removed without having to make holes in the tail light panel... unless of course it's the original panel and you might as well just attach with screws like original.  I'd have crapped if I took delivery of a new car and they drilled holes in the rear piece like that!

Quite true.  I'm gonna get some of that magnetic backing they use for making credit card magnets and trim it out. Its the original panel but the first guy who worked on it filled them in already.

Did that for a tie down decal on a 69 Shelby at this years shows (it is suppose to be stuck to the face of the rear bumper :(   with a little heat we got it to conform to the curves and could be easily removed when we choose to  ;)

Thin enough stuff that no one knew it was not permanent

Don't forget to epoxy in the screw heads ;)

Dave, I would install the dealer name plate with the magnetic stuff-its available at craft/hobby stores, also looks to me like the plate needs restoring first.........I think it would be a nice conversation piece to your pace car as well as proving its history!!

Thought the emblem looked familiar - the local shop just finished a 66 Dearborn car that was originally delivered at the same dealer - sorry for the poor picture but its the same

Small world! Thanks for the pic!

P.S. - There is a Stribling Chevrolet in Tennessee as well.  Should I bow my head in shame? :)
