when was the toe pad added to the carpets?

I believe that the toe pad first appears on the Dearborn cars
in early September of 1964. It is one of the “differences” indicating
the early “64.5” cars from the 65 cars.   All cars are registered as
1965’s. Check out early the differences between the 1964.5 from
1965 cars on the Internet. There are quite a few to check out.

My car is a February build Dearborn car. The carpet the I removed does not have a toe pad. I am going to replace the carpet and have  read that some early 65's might have come with no toe pad. I am looking to put what would be correct for this time period, back in the car.

The serge edge (no toe pad) carpet went all the way into January/February '65 production.

We haven't looked at the subject yet in the 65 Dearborn running changes thread.  Though it's on the list. Exact date will likely never be know since we don't know when each car was completed and the supply would likely have run out at different days based on supply and what color and body style carpet your asking about. At San Jose the vinyl sided no toe pad carpet was used well into 65 production and through the end of 1964. Many months past Sept

For your particular need and to provide you with some help I offer the following information after looking at the data I have over the last couple of hours

Based on the examples I have pictures I have carpet sets without the toe pad were installed in cars built at Dearborn, into Jan 1965. So should help with a Feb 65 Dearborn convertible. Of course real build dates are unknown but your about three weeks after what I found for comparison.

Since you have a convertible the  use of trimmed carpet with vinyl side panels is not something you are interested in. For others reading this post none convertible was made in three versions

1- No toe pad with vinyl sides
2- Toe pad with vinyl sides
3- Toe pad with full carpeted sides - no vinyl rocker panel sides

Thanks for the help. In going thru the sites gallery section all the  pictures that I saw for early 65's showed no toe pad. And the carpet that I took out had no toe pad so I will go with a no toe pad replacement. Thanks again.

Still have the carpet? If so I suggest that you document what you remove and take a good look at it to document that it is original and not a replacement even though reproductions have been made with the toe pad since the 70's

I still have the old carpet. What do I look for to determine if it is original or a replacement?
