Tony,

That was Kevin's comments about the driveshaft stripes. I guess we need to ask him. I was just trying to make sense of the information. Kevin mentioned stripes, but no lettering. And Tom mentioned lettering, but no stripes. I was just trying to figure out if they were both suppose to be there (lettering and stripes).

My drivershaft had a 1" wide white stripe about 12" from the rear of the drive shaft. There was also a bright green stripe about 1" wide. This green strip was about 8" from the rear of the drive shaft.

My notes from the late 90s also say there was a yellow stencil with "10078-5W" on it. In reality, it may have been 19078, as 66Candy shows in his picture.

Pete,
I pulled my driveshaft tonight and found stripes as well as the stenciling.  There are 2 light colored stripes and marks where 2 or three more stripes may have been but there doesn't seem to be color left.  The first stripe measures 1" wide, is 4-1/2" from the end of the tube at the rear, and seems to be white or possibly a very light blue.  The second stripe is 1-1/8" wide, 8-1/2" from the end of the tube at the rear and is clearly white.  The other "stripes" are questionable as they don't seem to have color, just a mark.  The first is 14-3/4" from the end of the tube at the rear, is 1" wide.  The last is either one 1" stripe or two stripes - a 1/2" stripe, a 1/4" space, and a 1/4" stripe.  I also found a yellow paint daub at the rear of the tube near the yoke on the opposite side of the stenciling.  Below are pictures.  My car is a C4 with a 2:83 conventional rear.

BTW  I want to take a look at these in the sunlight and see if a can get a better view of traces of color.  I let you know if I find anything different.

Research seems to indicate that there were three different driveshafts used for the 6-cylinder cars.
My 3-speed 2.77 used C6ZZ-4602-A     2-1/2” x 49-63/64”.
The 4-speed Dagenham used C5ZZ-4602-G     2-1/2” x 51”
And the C-4 that Tom and Kevin have, used the larger C5ZZ-4602-J     2-3/4” x 50-25/32”
I haven’t found anything yet to indicate that the rear end gearing played a role in the driveshaft length, only the transmission type.
If the driveshaft dimensions are the  same on both Tom and Kevin’s car (due to the fact that they are both automatics) then it might be reasonable to assume that the paint stripe color coding differences represent peculiarities specific to the plant where they were produced: Tom’s is a January Metuchen car, while Kevin’s is a July Dearborn.

Per the OEM Service Manual, the yellow daub on the rear driveshaft yoke is for clocking the driveshaft properly with the rear-end so that factory balancing is still valid.  The input yoke on the rear-end has a corresponding yellow daub.

Does anyone have any info from similar cars to mine to help me out with the color of these stripes?  I saw mention of a pink and white on a c-code automatic in VMF.  Would my 200 with an automatic use the same driveshaft?  I know the 200 and 289 C4 drive shafts are physically interchangeable, just not sure if there was some minor difference that would warrant a different paint code at the factory.  Or if assembly plants used different color codes.  It seems to me it would be logical that the plant that assembled the driveshaft would mark them.

Also, I'm scratching my head at the marks that could be stripes but have no color....

For what it’s worth, my research indicates that the same part number that was used on the 6-cylinder automatics was also used on C-code and A-code cars with either the 3-speed or 4-speed.
C5ZZ-4602-J     2-3/4” x 50-25/32”
However, if those 8-cylinder cars had the C-4 automatic they used part number C5ZZ-4602-H     2-3/4” x 51-1/16”

UPDATE:  After closer examination, I found slight traces of pink paint on the stripe that I couldn't identify.  Looks like I have a white stripe and a pink stripe.

This driveshaft measures 51-1/16" which probably means I ended up with the driveshaft from the 1965 Dearborn c-code donor car.  Its been so long since I did the swap (20 years) I couldn't remember. :)

Ford put date codes on everything else, do you suppose there's a date code on the driveshaft somewhere so we can be sure about when it was produced?

The only other markings I can find are in the pictures below.  22083-J3 and a W and a 4 on the yokes.

Just asking since I've not looked it up or measured. Is the diameter of the tube the same as a 289? Never mind I did check and they both share the same tube. 

You are aware that most drive lines didn't get the stencil included/visible on the tube?

You can make your own after determine the date coding pattern. The font is a standard stencil font. Just need to size it in one of many programs then print and cut it out. Sure you realize this and just checking to see if someone has already gone through the time and effort.
