Topic: 1967 GT Pop off Gas cap

My 67 Fastback that I have owed for 30 + years has a GT pop off Gas cap The base is labeled C7ZA-9A111-B and the cap is marked Autolite C7ZA-9A107. The GT is RED not BLACK as it appears that is correct for 67. Was RED also used on 67? Can the GT lettering be removed? Not obvious on how it is assembled. Any other difference between 67 and 68 than the color? As always thanks in advance for any input and guidance.

The paint color was different, but the basic casting (that has the C7 part number) did not change.

I was able to remove the red paint from an NOS gas cap with some paint stripper, and then shoot it with a semi-flat black.  Turned out great.  (Thanks for Richard Urch for prodding me to do it...)

 Can the GT lettering be removed? Not obvious on how it is assembled. Any other difference between 67 and 68 than the color? If that is the case , just as simple as stripping the red paint and painting the GT black. Tx!

Yes the GT emblem can be removed but you'll have to figure out how to reassemble the lid after you remove it IE the real part of the gas cap I believe has to be removed to get to the back side of the studs if you don't want to damage the face of the exterior cover by prying. Don't that also. There may be other methods since owners have at time purchased the Mustang pop  off caps and converted them for use on Shelbys where the emblems have to be removed

Believe the caps are identical except for the coloring

I stand by my reply #1.  Put stripper on the painted part.  I was judicious and used a Q-tip - no need to lather it all over.  The paint, applied to chrome, came off in about 2 minutes.   Then I applied the semi-flat black.

For those reading the base portion that is pictured with the C7 and Autolite is irrelevant once mounted because it is not visible. The portion that is more important as a Identifier when mounted on the car is the cap portion. On the back side of the cap portion are the C7 engineering numbers but more important is the trademark or lack of one which identifies when the assembly was used in production. the OP says his is marked Autolite which means it is the same as a typical assemblyline cap. FOMOCO in block letters inside a rectangle was used at the beginning of 67 production . The trademark changed shortly after to Autolite for the rest of 67 and all of 68 production. Probably before 1970 the Autolite trademark was dropped and it was left blank other then the engineering number. If you pop open the cap and on the backside of it only see the C7 engineering number and no trademark then it is a service replacement.
