Topic: 1970 disc brake distribution block date code

For the D0OA Kelsey-Hayes block, is the date code day of the month, month and last digit of year?  So for these it would be June 8th, 1971, July 21st, 1970 and March 28th, 1972?

Though the Date coding article in the Library shows the distribution block date coding pattern it appears that the pattern changed in 70 (like a fair number of things) to a Julian date. That would match what we're seeing in your examples IMHO

We could confirm it better if we knew what the the real build date of each car these came from was

I thought it was a numerical day of the year, plus year digit.

Mine shows 284 9, which I thought would be Oct 11th (day 284), 1969.

...which is interesting, since my car's build date is Oct 6th.  I always thought it was original, but apparently it got replaced at some point.

I thought that at first but the days of the week for the first two ended up being Saturday and Sunday. October 11th, 1969 is also a Saturday.

Is there any reason to believe that the supplier didn't have the plants open and making parts on a Saturday?

Do I have the dates you posted correct #86 1, #217 0 and #283 2 ?


These decode out using the following site as

- March 27, 1971 was the 86th day (a Saturday) of the year 1971 in the Gregorian calendar

- August 5, 1970 was the 217th day (a Wednesday) of the year 1970 in the Gregorian calendar

- October 10, 1972 was the 284th day (a Tuesday)  of the year 1972 in the Gregorian calendar a leap year

Sorry, Jeff, but Julian date is correct in its common usage.  The Gregorian Calendar did replace the Julian Calendar, but Gregorian Dates are always Month Day Year.  When talking about the number of days within a year, it is commonly referred to as the Julian Date.

No not a problem - I was too quick to react to what I had already been using and had included in prior posts and the article.

Trust this also helps, the attached picture is of my original K/H distribution block which I have restored, showing a production date of August 23, 1969 also a Saturday and my mustang was built on Sept 04, 1969.

Being able to compare the cars real build date and the date of block being made helps IMHO confirm the pattern and calendar type of dating method.

Checked my core distribution blocks.
The earliest observed was 217 9  aka August 5, 1969.
95% of mine were removed several years ago. No idea of lead times compared to build dates of cars. 1970 and later is often times difficult with paper door tags.

Yeah that's odd in that there were disc brake cars built in July. Earliest Marti I have is one scheduled for July 4th but built on July 21st.

But I see that the Julian date is the correct interpretation as I found a block dated 8 1 which must be January 8th 1971.
