More 1970 Shaker Painting Details
« on: November 18, 2020, 10:25:31 AM »
I have read that only the 69/70 Boss 302 came with the shaker scoop painted a semi-gloss black and the top of the ribs are painted an Argent Silver color or left bare aluminum color, and that the others like the 428 CJ came with the rib tops NOT painted with the Argent color? Can anyone shed some light on this detail?? I am in the process of finishing my shaker painting details and need help here, as I do not want to install my NOS Cobra Jet Scripts on the scoop sides and then find I have to repaint the scoop. The attached picture is only to show the painted ribs and is not 428 CJ specific. Thanks

Great pictures, will use these for reference for some of my detailing, Thanks.
It surprised me when I read that only the Boss 302 cars had the argent silver color on the top of the shaker scoop ribs, and is why I had to ask the question.
This car is pretty much optioned like my car was, but I thought all the 428 CJ motors came with the ribbed aluminum valve covers in 1970??

My September Dearborn 428CJ 4sp has chrome valve covers and no rev limiter. Can't say for sure that they are original but the valve covers have an original 70 emission decal on them. My October, November and December cars have the cast aluminum covers.

So the question I pose now is, where the shaker scoop rib tops painted or where they bare aluminum???

Although mine has gone through a couple of changes, when I originally bought the car in '81, it was bare aluminum. I suppose somebody could've changed it, but all of the rest of the paint was original (back then) so I can't imagine why somebody would screw with only the ribs on the top of the shaker. (It's a 351C sportsroof, not Mach or Boss, factory-ordered shaker according to Marti Report).

Hope that helps a tiny bit.

Thanks Hank, a very good validation, yes I believe that bare aluminum was the way the ribs where completed, as there is quite a lot of history of comments saying that, that was the way they came.
It just surprises me that a vendor to Ford would take the time to produce this type of finish as it would be somewhat time consuming.
My shaker had been repainted and did not even have the Cobra JET scripts on it anymore and that was in 1988 when I purchased my car.
I also plan to use a product called NYALIC to seal the bare aluminum rib tops to keep them from corroding.

This is the best argument for why Ford would not have delivered shaker equipped cars with bare aluminum on the scoop. The raw aluminum would be susceptible to oxidation very quickly.

I also can't imagine that they treated 428 or 351 cars any different than the Boss 302s.

It's also arguably more work to remove the black paint from the ribs vs painting them silver.

I'm just not convinced.

Yes I agree also, but the answer details present to my question other than the one presented by hankmeister is the only viable confirmation I have received, as I can not tell whether the 428 CJ link given by ExportMach are painted or bare.
Painted or bare is the question ??????

The tops of the ribs were painted. All originals that I have and have seen, anyway.

Thanks Carl, so the question still is, bare or painted, as I now have both ways for the most part some what validated, yet no clear answer from what actually was done.
And at the very least I would like to know what was done at the Dearborn plant as that is where my car was built in very early Sept 69 ???
Even though I have had my car for over 30 years, the shaker had been painted before I got it and did not have the tops of the ribs a different color than the body of the shaker scoop.
