power steering parts
« on: October 26, 2020, 05:07:21 PM »
I need the bolt, nut and washer (if required) for the clamp on the control valve to drag link. NPD has the kit (3B739-1A) but I have the clamp.
I can't find the part numbers in any of my books. Any ideas ?

First to illustrate to others what your referring to

Have you checked the Hardware list, Assembly Manuals and a MPC?

I think this is what you are referring to. Unfortunately, it's the service drawing and not the original assembly line. What you can get from the drawing is the bolt diameter (3/8 inch), and approximate length (1 1/2 inch).

You sure about that? The bolts are 5/16-18 NC. Finish is very dark, looks like a carburized bolt.

Nope. I'm inclined to agree with you, but the bolt is in a heavy duty application. The service replacement bolt is 20469-S (locator B-174) as shown in my previous post. The specs for it are 3/8-24 X 1 1/2 in L, GR 2, 1 inch thread length, 9/16 hex. I can't get to my 65 GT Fastback with power steering to see what is there. As to finish, the service replacement bolt has none specified. A "dark" finish might be phosphate.

I found a drawing I can read.
Bolt   20469-S (B-174)
washer  34807-S  (X-66)
Nut  33800-S (M-63)
I must admit that I don't know how to interpret these numbers.
I don' have an MPC if that is where they are found. What are the letters/numbers in ().
Thanks,
John

Using the search feature I found the following thread that offers a link to one - be it the later one there still is some value though you need to double check many details (assembly line verses replacement, but its a place to start. Used "MPC download" for the search

For reference, the service part number "locator code" references this finish:
20469-S8 (B-174)
34807-S8 (X-066)
33800-S8 (M-063)
S-8 is a clear zinc finish, and may NOT represent the assembly line part's finish.
(Lots of disclaimers when using Ford Service Part - aka MPC).

I don't know anything about service replacement parts. The OEM bolt and nut are 5/16"-18 NC and I don't see how a 3/8" diameter fastener could work in a 5/16" hole.

From the Cold War, a baby carriage factory, in (as in "Back In The -") the USSR, no matter how they workers attempted to put the stolen baby carriage together, it always came out as a machine gun -
Here's another picture of what Ford said the service parts were - all 3/8 diameter.
And a picture of the only undercarriage I could get to (yeah, it's a 66) - I measured the bolt end - 0.365 in dia.
I will pose this again - are we all on the same page? Can someone crawl under a car and verify what this thread is all about?

I can't find the one for the 67, so I grabbed one that appears to have a 68 date code on the cap. I parted this car out in 1985 or so.
The head is marked RSC and is a 5/16x24 NF with proper cone nut.

edit -- corrected to RSC

Bill,
If you would, some more details: bolt length, thread length, hex drive (should be 1/2 inch), and a picture of the nut, height and drive.
Was there a washer?
I would like to identify the hardware by Ford part number and enter that data in the Hardware Spreadsheets, cross referenced from the incorrect Ford service data.
