67 68 experts a question

I would like some input on the gas line protector pictures below.  Was it painted black or left natural or phosphate.  I am sure there is someone with a real original car who might know.  Opinions welcomed. Thanks!

Armond, I've never seen one other than black. Attaching bolts, phosphate.

I believe it should be dipped and not sprayed.

I just looked under my unrestored 67 San Jose Coupe and it's protector is black.

I have seen a number of 67 San Jose cars with the protector in bare steel . Not to say it was the only way but have seen more that were bare steel then the dipped black on the 67 San Jose Shelby's I am used to looking at. In 68 it was just the oposite I don't think I have ever come across one that was bare steel on a 68 NJ car (Shelby again) . Just a few variations which may have to do with the plant and supply at the time IMHO. Bob

Correction not all 67s got them. Early 67s with the one-piece gas line did not use this bracket.

Thanks Pete . I had brain fade and was only thinking about the gas lines as they related to this thread.  I should have qualified that with saying the all 67 and 68's with the cross over line had the protector. Bob

Just a question, did the 68.5 manual cobra jet & shelbys (with staggered shocks) use this guard?

No. The fuel line doesn't cross over on a CJ/KR 4 spd car so no need for guard.
