Help/Assistance with a Backing Plate.
« on: October 08, 2020, 11:36:50 PM »
Rear brake backing plate on a large brake Mustang

Trying to identify the provider of a backing plate with the stamped number of 71085 stamped at the 9 o'clock position looking at it from the center of the car mounted on the rear end housing

Don't have anything of this year to roll under to look and the pictures I have are all too close to to far to make out the detail I need

Thanks

71085,86  2 1/2 brake backing plate could be Bendix or KH.

So both suppliers stamped their backing plates in the same method and location?

Thanks

Found some pictures from other years and applications (brake size) with the identification number under Bendix on those backing plates and stamped cross wise. While others were without a markers name and stamped so it could be read if the backing plate is turned clock wise

If the pattern was the same I may have found my answer but not certain this applies to this application and year.

Looks like the Ford oval is different.

Maybe I need to look at starting a backing plate  thread/article after I collect more.

From my research:

Kelsey-Hayes 10x2 inch rear backing plates are numbered 71085 / 71086.
Bendix 10x2 inch rear backing plates are numbered 317558 / 317559.

Jeff, I concede the point that Brian and Scott posted evidence for. I got my parts mixed up.I removed my post so as not to confuse thinks further.

Thanks - interesting that the couple I have pictures of that area don't show the KH under the number. If they had won't have had to ask :)

Do you happen to know the orientation of the Ford oval on the Bendix?

I do not. For what it's worth, 95% of my 9 inch rear ends with 2 inch backing plates, came out of Dearborn. Occasionally we see a 1-3/4 inch Bendix plate on 1967-68, 8 or 9 inch rear ends.

Chocostang may know. He was one of my sources for the stamped numbers as I recall.

Thanks - Don't believe the car assembly plant has a bearing on the details and discussion since the brakes were possibly/likely installed at Sterling since if installed at the car plants it would require that the axles be removed then reinstalled. Since Sterling supplied all three plants it appears that which rearend got which brake suppliers sub-assembly was based on supply and was random. Sometimes different brand on each end have been found.

At this point and moving past my need I'm starting to look at the stampings across the years and applications and hope to find patterns and hopefully the design was used on all different sizes.

Did finally fine a faint KH on the pair I had in a set of pictures :)
