grounding strap
« on: October 01, 2020, 12:22:50 AM »
Just rebuilt engine and reinstalling. I found a woven copper ground strap with eyelet on one end attached to a stud on the brake power booster and the other end missing. I searched this site as well as some parts vendors and only found insulated wire with eyelets that would run in area of alternator (which is present on my car). Is this an odd  item added by others over the years and is not used? Is there to be ground at the rear of engine to firewall of the insulated type, like the Marti repro?

The ground at the rear of engine to firewall is of the insulated type, like the Marti repro. From the back of the engine crossing over to the firewall is where the ground is engineered to go 65-70 V8. The woven copper ground strap with eyelet on one end is something added by others .

Bob, I thought that the engine grounding strap wasn't used in 1970 and I am wondering if this is correct?

OP was asking about 1969 given his signature car which I have a high confidence level on.You have ,me second guessing myself on a 70 question. 1970 Mustangs are not my strong suit so please verify 1970 further.

I will admit that my knowledge isn't that great either but I was under the belief that on 1970 cars the engine grounding strap was removed due to changes/improvements in earthing. Though it has been recommended that the strap is useful as the improvements were marginal and the engine could do with improved earthing. I have found it hard to confirm as the 1970 engine assembly manuals/drawings are not available (or hard to get) and so its one area that's not clear to me as well.

This is a good time for you to familiarize yourself with the "Ford Car Parts" manuals (aka, MPC) which is available in the library. Find the Ford base number for the ground strap in the illustrations section, then locate that number in the parts section. Then next step is to look at how it was serviced at dealers.

If I'm not mistaken....... (my standard disclaimer)

In 70, Ford added a grounding lug in the negative battery cable that grounded the body thru the right apron by the battery and omitted the engine/firewall ground wire .

Not a pigtail off of the terminal but a midway clamp as pictured in the link
