I wounder if something about the boxes being painted black on the car to conceal flash rust after installation should be mentioned or not ? It was done on many but not all from evidence seen on survivors and is mentioned in the assemblyline manuls too.

Actually I mentioned this on page 24 if you look there.  Just under the functional diagrams.
See if that wording looks ok.  I also did not want to say it was on "all" and left wiggle room on it being done.

I missed that before. I would think that it would be informative to elaborate that it was most likely blacked out so that flash rust was not seen when the hood was open given the instructions in the assemblyine manuals indicating to brush paint what can be seen from above.I envision that as a worker with a 1 inch brush (from strokes I have measured) leaning over a fender or apron and brushing what he could reach with the brush. Top cover,tag and a little of the sides typically . What with the steering box units typically oily or cosmoline covered from mfg assembly, the black paint product added on the assemblyline did not adhere well and typically didn't last well ether.  Accurate is the same as wiggle room in this case .The word all would not be accurate .  I agree which is why I said "on many but not all" . Great job on the steering box addition as with the others .

Only comment from looking at it for the first time would be to give up some space on pg 25 by reducing all the decoded tags (8 examples decoded) and leave just the ones on the left hand of the page and use the right side to show a picture showing the cast date since both details are mentioned in the paragraph directly above. Page could use soem white space to balance it out. Not a terrible thing if left as is - but from the layout angle thought I would offer the thought

Good input Jeff and Bob.  I will modify to address both so it adds the information and flows better.  Always prefer to cover as much as possible so we have it to refer back later.

Updated the steering box pages 24, 25, 26.  Thanks for the input Bob and Jeff.

Added photos and wording on the steering box black out.  Thanks to Brant Halterman for photos.
Added photos of the steering box casting dates with corresponding steering box tags.
Added a note that the long shaft steering boxes never were installed on Cougars and that the SMB-A, B, H and J boxes are all long shaft steering boxes.  Thanks for Scott Behnke our resident Cougar expert.

Although listed, there isn't any mention of the early 67, short shaft box with the 1-inch sector and the transition (and date/estimated date) to the 1-1/8" shaft that remained in use thereafter.

I noticed on page 32 you mentioned 5/16-20 as coarse thread is that correct or should it be 5/16-18

Richard,  my notes show a change over date of approximately May 1967 from the 1 inch to 1.125 inch sector shaft but I cant be certain of that so I left that part out. 

6t9m1 good catch on page 32, I need to correct that to 5/16-18 as that is correct.

C6ZZGT I mention in the beginning of this article on the first page its a work in progress and I am releasing sections as I get them finished otherwise its too much to do all at once.  Center links will eventually be in there as well.
