San Jose, License Plate Lamp Shield 352361 S100 screws?
« on: September 04, 2020, 07:54:21 AM »
I have imprints of pan head screws (in the rubber) at the locations of all 3 screws of my original rear license plate rubber shield (Nov. 2nd, 66 actual build date).
There are no signs of this item being replaced as it still has remnants of the Earl Sheib paint I had shot on at it's first repaint (spring of 1979).

Osborn AM & spreadsheets indicate Ford suggested the use of the 352361 S100 (SCREW,ROUND/WASHER PHLPS,TPG)

I wondered what others have found in use. Also, what finish should be on this. "S100" isn't much of a clue.

I typically find pan head with remnants of S36 finish.

The specified hardware part number is 352361-S100. Finish code -S100 is specified on the supporting drawing, 352361. As the screw is used in an area prone to moisture (AMK guide says the material is stainless steel), I would think an additional preservative was included, wax perhaps, or some type of sealer.

Corrected the typo...sorry 'bout that Jim. Banana fingers on a smart phone, then copied the mistake without a double check
..too concerned that I'd get dinged on incorrect name or nomenclature so I focused in on those details.
Thanks for the noted and needed correction.

I typically find pan head with remnants of S36 finish.
This is what I find too (we except no signs of the S36 finish), inconsistent with the assembly manual and spreadsheets.
Coincidently, my rear apron was installed with the same types of pan head screws, except the two that were in place when body color was shot. Those two were different, they were like the ones under the door glass weatherstripping up by the drip rails (at least on my example). Witness marks on the original valance indicated the valance screws were in place at every repaint and the original body color under all screws excepting those two flat-headed Phillips screws.

This observation leads me to think (at this plant and assembly location anyways) that the same screws from the valance were used on the License Plate Lamp Shield rubber strip. If other examples concur, I have no troubles using those S36 pan head screws at this location on my build.

The two assembly manuals (67 and 68) show the only Mustang applications, so the screw may have been an assembly line change to a screw already being used.
The 75 Ford Car Parts (aka MPC) calls out 378729-S(x) 8-15X1/2 round/washer heat tapping Phillips, as a service replacement. That screw is only called out for 65-66 wiper nozzles.

Screws used were different in 67 at San Jose than other years and plants - even from Shelby's from my observations and pictures

Always looked like they were P & O

The pan head screws securing the shield in this example (pictured here) appear to be slightly larger than the pan head screws securing the rear valance. My inventory of fasteners seems to support the difference. Phosphate & Oil will be easier in that case.

A couple of additional interesting observations : The 1967 "only" MPC, shows the License Plate rubber Shield, but no fasteners are listed. And secondly, the 1960-68 MPC shows the shield with 3, 352361-S100 fasteners required, and notes them as "No. 8-18 x 1/2", washer head, self-tapping screws", with no reference as to head detail (hex, round, pan, phillips, etc.). In addition, there is a footnote that this part is not supplied as a Service Part (ie, Factory only).

Until someone removes a screw, measures it (thread diameter, thread pitch, thread length, tip type, head diameter, head type) it will remain anonymous.

In which section? I found the screw listed in the Part Number section, but not shown in the Illustration Section.

The references are minimal at best. The full description is on the drawing for the screw.
In addition, there is a footnote that this part is not supplied as a Service Part (ie, Factory only).
Not unusual on a low usage item, and therein lies our dilemma.

When I took apart the Shelby I took copious notes. Except on this screw. It's noted as
"Large head self tap, length 1/2in." Not that useful and I'd have to go through my trunk area screws to find it.

A casual search for my old Shelby shield didn't find it, but I did find the one from the parts car (7R01C189340 Tag Date 06C). Naturally I didn't find the screw but I do have a good imprint of the screw on the shield. Its shows a diameter of 0.4".

I'll try later to find the screw.

Jim : You must be looking at some other reference. The 1967 "only" MPC has no separate Text and Illustration Sections. They are both in one bound volume.

The references are minimal at best.

I agree ; I was just noting what I observed.

The full description is on the drawing for the screw.

Yes they are. However, in all of the S&UPC that I have, the 352361-S100 does not appear. Where did you find it ? If in the AMK Guide, I do not have it here in Colorado, I left it in Omaha.

Not unusual on a low usage item, and therein lies our dilemma.

Agree

Here is the AMK guide photo for 352361-S8  Pic 1. Numbers match, finish S8.

Note that 378729, as Jim noted a few posts back, is also in this section, but with a -S finish.

I found the Shelby shield.
Instead of editing post above I'll add this pic:

Top shield is the part's car shield, bottom is lime gold Shelby. The Shelby had a lousy scratch and squirt in the late 80s so the shield got painted.
If I place what some people call the door trim screw (0.5 dia head) in the part's car shield it fits really, really well.
If I place the 352361 (0.4 head)  in the Shelby shield it doesn't fit too well. The caveat is that in fitting the Shelby taillight panel at least the two outer screws of the shield would have to be removed at SA.

I think I'm more confused than when I started.

Of course in the picture it may be the angle - a possibility. Would need more to make an educated IMHO guess.

That is the style of head (not to be confused with the other style of interior weather strip screw you posted in reply #13) that is found on 69 San Jose examples

Have seen the flat heads used on some San Jose examples just never documented what year the example was or apparently took a picture. Not like every car still has the shields or screws after all these years and often I just get a shot of the shield and not the hardware
