Topic: 67 Glove Box - Bumper and Light Switch

Ran across this a while back and thought I would post to see what others think on the subject.

On the inner edge of the glove box opening I'm finding three configurations on unrestored cars

One come shaped bumper and light switch




One cone shaped bumper with no hole for light switch




One cone shaped bumper and one bumper (shaped differently) in the same location of the light switch

I have not seen a bumper in the switch location. Possible a mistake or done by a PO.

Think I've got more than three or four examples and at least on a couple of really clear ones the bumpers are the same shape. Don't have enough  data points, not allot of people show their cars with the glove box open and I haven't taken many pictures of that area.;; All the reason to post and ask.

Also have seen the double bumper on San Jose and Dearborn cars so far.

Now that this is posted maybe we'll get some more data - with or without.

The car was equipped with the "Courtesy Light Group" RPO.

PART I

Last week, on my way to our Southern Colorado Vacation home, as I have done the last 5 or 6 years, I stopped at my favorite 1957-59 Ford junkyard, which also happens to have 4, very well stripped, 1967 Mustangs (well I guess really 3-1/2 since one is basically half of a shell). One of my main reasons for stopping this year, was to take some pictures of Glove Compartment areas to show bumpers and Glove Compartment Light Switches, or dimples in their location. All 4 cars had what appeared to be unmolested (?) areas in the Glove Compartment Area, and all 4 still had the VIN numbers on the fender apron. All 4 were also San Jose cars. I took a lot of detail close up pictures for the purpose of adding them to this thread. I have also added the VIN numbers to each picture (note that on the second San Jose one I have shown, my picture cut off the last 2 digits of the VIN).

In addition, to “break up the San Jose monopoly”, I have added pictures of my Dearborn built, “molested” 1967. I say “molested” because in the early 80’s when my Dad still had the car, after drilling out the original dimple, I added the Glove Compartment Lamp, and at the same time, the Glove Compartment lock set.

Due to the number, and apparently size of pictures involved, I will Post this in several parts.

Note that on the first San Jose car in this Part III, exhibits the anomaly (?) shown in one of the pictures that Jeff previously Posted. Specifically having a rubber bumper in the location of where the Glove Compartment Light Switch would be. At the time Jeff Posted the picture, there was conjecture that a Previous Owner may have added the bumper there. Now, seeing another such case, makes me wonder. Although possible that another PO may have done the same thing, I find this unlikely. I think it may be just as likely that some dashes had the dimple accidently punched for a light switch, and when this mistake was observed, the solution was to  just add another bumper here (not necessarily the same bumper as was used for the normal upper bumpers. Just a thought.

Looking at the pictures of the bumpers Posted thus far, it appears that their shape varied ; some shorter and more pointed than others ; some taller with a more rounded point ; and some appear to have been made with a flat (.no point). To me this does not appear as a sign of wear, or use. A worn one appears to just have a more rounded point. In any case, some interesting observations.

Guess the next step is to graph out what we have by plant and production period to see if there is a pattern. I do have more just posted one of each of the variations as I had found them 

Think there is a possibility that the same bumper was used but since it is compressed more (given the location) it flattened out much more and depressed the point. Just a possibility IMHO at this point.

Normally adding and changing bumpers like this are a result of complaints or addressing issues and are mentioned in TSBs so that earlier cars can be retrofitted by the dealer if there is a customer complaint. Like we often saw for the rear interior panels on fastbacks. Don't recall one related to the glove box.
