Hood hinge spring variation
« on: August 13, 2020, 06:15:18 PM »
The other day I pulled the springs out of storage to prep them for phosphating and I noticed that the two springs that I am almost certain came off my Mach are completely different from each. They are different lengths, diameters and wire sizes. I am going to dig into the MPC to see which spring is correct and then try and find a second. Has anyone else experienced this situation where the hood hinge springs arent matching?

1970 Mercury Cougar uses a spring like you describe. Thicker wire, and shorter stack of coils from normal.

One of the parts with few iterations over the years.  Ford and Mercury MPC pics attached.  Both provide spring lengths so you can at least compare that dimension.

Yes it sounds like his car may have picked up a '70 Cougar hood spring at some point in its life, while the other spring is for a Mustang. Easy to fix since the hinges are the same.

Here are a couple of pics of my springs. The longer one measures 5 15/32" LOA x 1 31/32" dia. x 3/16" wire dia. The shorter one measures 5 5/16" LOA x 2 5/32" dia. x 1/4" wire dia. It appears the longer spring is the correct spring for my Mach and the shorter one is for something else, probably Cougar.
