Did all '68 4 speeds get a tach as standard equipment, or just 4 speed GT's?

I may be wrong, but I thought the tachs were optional equipment for all model Mustangs in 1968, with the exception of the CJ and the Shelbys.

In further poking about I have found reference that on S codes with 4 speeds they were standard. 

My Marti on my 68 S GT 4 speed coupe mentions no tach, but it has an 8k which I am sure is OEM from the factory....

I recently found a 1968 Ford dealer option sales book. It shows a four speed and tachometer offered together as one option for all V8 engines. The four speed was also offered alone. Marty

Generally speaking all 68 Mustangs with manual transmission came with a tach (includes 3-speeds and 4-speeds). I am not going to say because as soon as I do, someone will say that they have an "oroginal" 68 manual transmission Mustang without a tach. 

The only tach for Mustangs in 68 is the 8K tach.

Respectfully, I gotta wave the BS flag on that statement.  Marti's Mustang By the Numbers book has 8,147 tachs in 1968, and there were 28,073 3 speeds just for the 289 2V engine.   Now then, there were 3,858 2892v, 3 F2v, 5800 S codes and 1616 R Codes, all 4 speeds.  There are even more 4 speed manuals than tachs.

Well... that number is "correct", but it only notes that is how many were ordered as an option, not how many were installed. 

As noted, my S GT coupe has one, and it is not an option on the Marti, so is not inclued in the number quoted.  So that means it doesn't exist?

I am not sure how Marti counted the number of tachs. I suspect it may be based on the number of the tach option orders and may not include the ones in the four speed combination option.

Oz390 the combination option make perfect sense for you. To know for sure you would have to contact Kevin Marti and see if he can tell if yours was the combination option.

Reading this sales option book has given me a lot of in site to some option groups and what cars were eligible for them.
The way it worked it sat on the salesman's desk and the customer saw the photos and salesman could read the description, requirements and pricing.
On this page I learned the speed control was not available  for the 289 4V engine.  Interestingly there was no 289 4V for 1968.

+1  My dad's 68 S code has a 6K tach and it is a early car. I would agree that latter in the year mostly 8K tachs were used.

 I agree more 8K but I dont think it was early/late thing. Seen several CJs (non KR) that had 6K
