Rear Brakes - Parking Brake Link KH or Bendix
« on: July 30, 2020, 06:19:40 PM »
Helping a guy out with OEM brake parts. Car is 1967 San Jose (Shelby GT500). Did San Jose use both Bendix and Kelsey Hayes components? I have examples of both and want to get him set up with the period correct component for his rear brake assembly. Thanks.

If the backing plate was KH all of the components inside would be KH too. Ditto for Bendix. They were typically installed as a already put together backing plate assembly.  I have typically found KH on 67 Shelby's which should represent SJ however the 67 Shelby's got the special 2 1/2 inch rear brake set up which might have effected which supplier they were sourced from. Not to say Bendix didn't make 2 1/2 rear brakes because they did.   I wouldn't go so far as to say Bendix was never used but it certainly had to be way less given the majority have been KH observed.I would first determine which backing plates the guy is using and fill them with the same MFG components like they would have been when they were installed new. The 2 1/2 KH backing plates are the hardest to find .Next in order of rarity is the K/H 2 1/2 inch drum. If he doesn't have anything to begin with then look for KH which is most commonly seen on the cars.

Thanks Bob.

Parking brake cable levers, are also stamped KH and Bendix. We will match to the backing plates.

The brake shoe linings would also be K/H or Bendix, they are usually marked on the edge.

Your welcome Scott. Yes I am aware of the park brake lever is marked and as Charles posted, the brake shoes which is why I stated  "and fill them with the same MFG components like they would have been when they were installed new." The backing plate assembly was assembled at the mfg not Ford so all of the components would be by the same MFG.loaded on to the backing plate.

+1 Supplied as a preassembled subassembly from the subcontactor to the rear end plant assigned for a particular vehicle and application

FWIW, though regular Mustang ( as in not Shelby, wider brakes), I have an example with one of each. One Bendix and one Kelsey Hayes. I have no reason to believe either have been swapped (owned since 1978).

On a regular Mustang it is less then the majority but does happen that one backing plate (and associated same mfg internal components )is on the right and another mfg on the left. On a 67 Shelby as indicated by the OP this is much less likely given the special 2 1/2 backing plates used on the specially assembled 9 inch rear housing assembly. It also had a special differential used which adds to the idea of specifics for this particular assemble which would suggest that not too many things would be done randomly.

Allot could have happened to a used daily driver after 11 years of use but have seen this on a few cars though not typical practice as we see allot more with matches.

That is one of the oddities some owners choose to "correct" during a restoration
