Help with wiring please!
« on: July 27, 2020, 02:32:14 PM »
Trying to finally finish up wiring on a gt w/fog lights and tach.  Can anyone tell me what the yellow w/black stripe and blue w/black stripe wires are that are part of the 12-pin instrument cluster harness?  Thank you in advance for your experience and insight.

Apologies.  This is for a '67 fastback.  Thanks (now with an Atari technology level - will try to update my profile).

On 67, since this is area of forum posted:

Blue/Blk= optional clock power.
Yellow/blk = 1/2 of alt warning light. Other half black/blue.

This aligns with the diagram below, but as far as I can tell, these are for non-tach cars.  As you can see in the picture there are several deviations for a tach harness from the diagram, the yellow/black is in the 655 position and the blue/black is in the 654 position.  Unless I'm missing something really obvious.  Thanks.

Do not use diagrams from a non tach car to help confuse yourself, find the correct diagram for a tachometer car.

Service manuals do not have a schematic for the tach cars but I believe the Osborn Assembly Manual does but not near me at this moment.

Rich, and what ever Panther 99 secret identity is,
The 67 Mustang Electrical Assembly Manual does not show a tachometer schematic, but it does show a where to install the factory tach in the ignition circuit under the dash (AM0018 page 54, E7-8617-1). (It's the same inline hookup as a 65/66 tach, between the ignition and the pink resistance wire.) I assume the standard instrument lights provide illumination as they are not described. Page 21 (E7-8145-2) lists 6 different cluster assemblies, 4 with tach (6K, 8K, 6K with Decor, 8K with Decor). The wiring is simple, where the wires hooks to up is subject to the "optional" clusters.

My comments apply to my signature car with tach and clock.

Ding Ding Ding!  We have a winner.Ford, in their infinite wisdom, never published any 67/68 tach-specific wiring diagrams.  I have reverse-engineered them, and Bossbill is correct.  The yellow/black and black/blue do go where the two ammeter lines were in the plug for the non-tach configuration.  Blue/Black is at the end; yellow/black next in line.

You can use the Cougar one from the shop manual.  Only requires a little reading between the lines.

If I remember right, one side of the alternator light goes to Ign 'on' (12V) and the other side to alternator (stator I think). If the alternator is not charging stator becomes a ground and the light is on. If the alternator is charging you get 12V on both side of the light and it goes out.
That's from memory.

Thanks to all for the help.  Hoping to finish up this week.  Nothing too secret - Panther (kid's school mascot) 99 (son's racing number).  If I've got something set to abnormally hide, please let me know - new user on this forum.  We've done a '70 mach for the older son's project and now redoing the '67 I've had since 1984 for the younger son's and getting down to the last of the wiring (I HOPE!!).
