San Jose hood latch assembly bolt
« on: July 22, 2020, 03:15:40 PM »
This is for a 66 San Jose May build (Shelby).    Pictured is the one of the two bolts that attaches the grill to the hood latch assembly.
The nice 'spread sheet' of head bolt markings that JWC66K put up a few years ago don't show this particular pattern and the washer
is flat on the backside.   The witness marks on the grill reveal that the bolts probably have toothed washers.

So, 1) does the bolt have any application in a 66 San Jose built car and 2),  if not this bolt, then what would be a good
example of what belongs here?

Thanks!

That head marking is not listed because it is a Metric bolt (the 9.8 is the Grade), which were not used by Ford or Shelby in the 1960's and 70's.

As already mentioned your bolt is a metric replacement. The bolt that goes there is typically the same style as your picture which corresponds to the witness marks in the metal. SEMS is the typical marking .There can be others. You can research the spread sheet Jim did to figure out size and length. It is a common one. AMK sells a kit most likely.

he will have to also change the clip nut as forcing the metric bolt in there likely boogered the threads.

Your car appears (by VIN and projected build date) to fall into right after a transition period where the bolt design likely changed from the one with the integrated star washer to the rounded washer style.

Looking at other cars in that general period (sorry most people don't take or send pictures of head bolts for us to use) I would guess that it was most like one with the SEMS (as Bob had posted ;) head markings like the one shown below
