1968 Air cleaner vacuum module
« on: June 20, 2020, 09:01:36 PM »
I recently picked up a nice 68 air cleaner assembly. I’m starting to prep it to be blasted but noticed that the snorkel has a vacuum module . I have another 68 air cleaner that I finished a few years back and it does not have this vacuum module. Is this a legit 1968, or perhaps a late 68 or 69 air cleaner assembly? I can’t seem to find any date stamps on the snorkel or base.? The vacuum module looks to be riveted to the snorkel? Trying to figure out if this is correct for a 68 and if so why would one have a vacuum module and the other not?

I do not know the change over date but the early 68s had the vacuum motor.

Thanks for that , good info. Now the question is, were they riveted in place like my example? I want to media blast the housing but don't want the blast media to mess with the vacuum module. If these are riveted I am assuming a steel or aluminum rivet? I am thinking of removing for blasting and painting then reinstalling.

Thank you, Bill.

Yes they were originally riveted. Don't recall (this specific application) if they were aluminum or steel. Real easy to test with a magnet once you drill one out

Just found this on the West Coast Cougars site..
"This air cleaner is the early style with a vacuum actuated valve. 289-2V , 302-2V, and 302-4V engines prior to 4/2/1968. Ford part number C8AZ-9A626-A."

Looks like originals were a "silver" cad or zinc? where NOS units are gold cad. Curious, I don't have a 1968 manual or literature to show where the vacuum hose hooks up. Would it be fed from the intake?

Just drilled out the rivets and found there are indeed steel. Magnet test successful..

John,
Thank you for listing the Ford service number. Way too many seen to believe "numbers" are meaningless or bad, and tend to ignore them. Stock, service, part, inventory and other numbers that identify a specific item are beneficial.
