Should my 65 289 starts solenoid be black or brown? Also, should it have the ford stamp on top

What's the scheduled build date of the car and assembly plant?

Should be black with most likely block FoMoCo for that late of a car.  The brown one was possibly only used the first part of '64.

FYI, the DSO is the district sales office the order came through.  The assembly plant is the second character of the VIN.  In your case it would F, R or T... assuming we are talking about a Mustang here.

Thank you very much. Mine is a 75 c code convertible. The second letter is F. What plant is that?

"F" would indicate Dearborn. Yours likely starts 5F0873.....

Looking through the pictures found the following

5F689xxx Oval

5F703xxx Rectangle

The FoMoCo seems to be a running change or indicate two different suppliers or plants. If you care there will also be a date indicating when it was made on the bottom of the case on the metal cover but for your car's plant and time period I hope this helps

PS- welcome to the site. You might find it helpful to add  your cars information to your signature since you will need to include it in most questions you post.
