67 SJ Running Change Survey - Fuel Line Routing

Working down the list of running changes that took place during 1967 production at San Jose as the title states this thread we're looking at the routing of the fuel line which changed during 67 production. The change meant that various panels, brackets and lines changed to support and make the change possible.

I'm using this first post as an introduction to the subject and reserving it for later findings and conclusions. The following posts are posted to illustrate the differences between the earlier and later versions.

As in the past I invite others to contribute data points for the survey so they can be added to what I've already collected.

Remember San Jose only in this survey. Need a real build date - style of version of fuel line routing. If no real build date then the first 4 digits or all of the sequential VIN so that the data can be charted for survey and change over dating.

Way too long of a delay for this - Forgive me. The conversation about the change over date came up the other day and I realized I had never posted my findings. Like some other surveys I am some what surprised as to how well the data collected has helped narrow down these change over dates in this case to in this case to less than a wee in the spread between the last know of the first version and the first know of the second version. In some we have multiple of examples of this same completion date. SO here are my results as of the current date.

As usual did find examples that there were some cars that did not fit the pattern but these were always "orphans" (no other similar cars built near them) and restored cars that may have lost their original routing when the floors and other panels were replaced and the original patterns were forgot or ignored.



- Mustangs/Shelby's completed on March 16, 1967 had the earlier/first routing

- Mustangs/Shelby's completed on March 22, 1967 had the later/second routing

Leaving us with an unknown period of five completion days at San Jose during the 67 production period

This tightens up the dates from earlier by 2-3 weeks

Earlier/First "inside" routing

I1- This picture illustrates a V8 equipped 67 Mustang. In this version the line is a one piece tube from this point (really the short section inside the engine compartment) to the rubber hose that attaches it, at the rear, to the fuel sending unit.

Arrows are placed in the pictures to help others follow the line along its route




I2- Along the drivers side front frame rail




I3- Under the frame rail




I4- Along the inner surface of the drivers side frame rail




I5- Past the transmission mount and aligns itself with the rear brake line and the drive line tunnel.




I6- Travels rearward down the driveline tunnel to just in front of the rearend




I7- Takes a bend out to the rear frame rail on the driver's side.




I8- Line takes a sharp bend where the floor and frail meet




I9- Follows the rear frame rail to the front edge of the trunk or gas tank drop.




I10- Takes a couple of bends to align with the gas tank mounting lip. The arrow shows that on this example the line has slipped out of the last retaining clip just before the sending unit connection.

Later/Second "outside" version.

O1- For consistency I'm using another V8 car for the comparison and to illustrate this section of the route.




O2- Rear wheel well picture




O3- Front fuel line enters and passes through the drivers side torque box




O4- Exits the rear of the torque box and travels down the exterior surface of the front driver's side frame rail.




O5- At the rear end of the frame rail the long rear fuel line takes a jog and aligns itself with the rocker panel pinch weld.




O6- Line travels down the pinch weld towards the rear of the car.




O7- At the rear spring front mounting plate in the unibody the line turns inward and passes under a fuel line guard. Marked by the blue arrow, then takes a turn parallel to the rear frame rail.






O8- To the rear of the emergency brake cable mount the line bends over to the inner frame rail surface and travels rearward to the gas tank drop section of the rear/trunk floor.




O9- Line finally bends towards the center of the car, following the lip of the gas tank floor opening to the sending unit.

This car in the pic has the earlier. So does the Shelby.

Our 67 SJ GT convertible built 11-04-66 was the early one piece gas line.

Thanks got everyone's data entered.

So far I'm focusing in on the 7R188xxx-7R195xxx range. Approx Early March to Mid April period. So cars in that range are important if we have them.

The VIN date falls in about the 21st (a Tuesday) to the 23rd of March per Vol 2 of the Mustang Production Guide.

Thanks but for a survey/study real build dates are what really helps place a car. Too many examples with small to big differences between scheduled and real  ;)

Especially since we have that option given the available records for the 67 + years

No, I never got the Marti Report. Although I think Charles did. The warranty plate date was March 21, 1967.
