Need Date Help Please
« on: May 20, 2020, 06:05:39 PM »
Trying to verify the door tag (Which looks new)  build date of my 65 SJ Fastback

I've tried this registry but not having much luck.  http://www.early-mustang.com/index.php/64-66-mustang-registry
Any help would be appreciated

5R09A179303.  Also, at the rear VIN# stamping on D-Side fender apron it has 1  14  2D stamped above the VIN rotated 90 Degrees. What is that ?

1  14  2D is the date  that part was stamped. jan 14 on 2nd shift at dearborn stamping plant. post the rest of your door tag info. we cannot decode the scheduled build date just from the vin. also suggest you add your car's info to your signature so as not to be asked each time for it. welcome to the site. your answers are here, just ask. also check out the library section. you will find it informative.

28A DATE
That converts to a "scheduled" build date of January 28, 1965. Your VIN falls in line with other Mustangs around that date.

So with the Fender Apron having a January 14th stamped date (Michigan Mfg)  does that fall in line with the Jan 28th. (San Jose) Date ?

There is no rule when it comes to this.  The scheduled build date of the car was a guess and could be off as much as days/weeks in either direction.  It takes a thorough examination of the car to help narrow down the actual build date, but without records from Ford, we would never know for sure.

Generally, it would be expected that any parts on the car would pre-date the actual assembly date by a few days to a few weeks.  Sometimes longer, but typically not more than a couple months.

Unfortunately, these vague qualifiers have to be used in this context because we simply cannot say for sure.  We can only observe what we find on original cars to help with these questions.
