Topic: 1967 Mustang Emergency Brake Handle Assembly

Looking for how the "H" shaped detent & spring go into the body of the E-Brake handle body. This fell out while I was cleaning it up before I could see exactly how it goes together. Any help or a detailed picture would be a tremendous help and appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I took these apart for replating the parts a few weeks ago so these were to be my reassembly images. I figured these were all I needed but without the pieces in my hands (pieces are away at the replater service), I cannot answer your question.

Hallo Tom,
i rebuild mine two years ago and had the same problem… the short end of the spring goes to the H-detent, the long one towards the handle. It will “push” the detent down so it engages with the saw-tooth of the handle when pulling out.
You can easily check the function without cables and Installation.

Thank you for the follow-up information and pictures. I can see the "long tail" of the spring clearly in your pictures. I believe that will help me get mind back in the correct operating position.

How do you get the handle off? Do you drill out the pin?

To remove the handle I use vice grips on the plastic to bust it away revealing the metal assembly below. Then I pry the metal tube off the stalk leaving the rivet in place. With the metal part out of the way you can grasp the pin with vice grips an pull it out. That way the hole is undamaged by drill bits.

My experience was - When you break the plastic off the metal tube of the handle, I found the hole in the handle goes all the way through. The pin can be driven out from the opposite side.

Yes, it should be.
It has the "FoMoCo" Logo stamped on the side of the handle.

Nice. Mine does not appear to have a FoMoCo stamp. I thought it was original until now. I wonder if any originals did not have a stamp or should I start assuming mine is not original

This spring at the cable attaching point, how does it go back?
(My service manual is at home, if it even shows any help).
