Engine Just about Done
« on: December 30, 2010, 07:25:30 AM »
I would appreciate any critique/correction/coaching.  I plan on it being a (sort-of) concours driven car.  I have added A/C and P/S.  I understand that I overdid some details, such as some bolts and the P/S pump tag not painted and all the black stuff too shiny, but go ahead and correct exerything you see and I'll correct it.

Bryan, it looks great and I'm not really qualified to offer advice but just wondering when and where you plan to debut the car?

Bryan, it looks good. Overspray on the exhaust is missing. The PS tag should be painted with the housing. I would recheck your paint details on the A/C compressor because I believe the cast iron Tecumseh compressor was painted as a assembled unit . You have the bolts and head spacer left unpainted.I have seen the spacer without much paint on it before and think it was prone to flacking off. I believe it started out painted as a unit however. I am not 100% sure but it appears from the pictures that the compressor hardware is of a generic nature instead of what came on the compressor. As you acknowledged , you over did somethings. My critique comments are the things that stand out most as not being original to me for what ever it is worth. Bob

Hi Bob,
Thanks for your feedback.  I'm almost positive the A/C compressor is painted black after assembly as you stated.
I am also certain that the P/S tag is also painted like the reservoir.
I need to fog some of the blue onto the manifolds near the heads.

Thanks and Happy New Year

Looks like you have been doing some work.  In response to a request for feedback I offer the following

1- As mentioned the PS tag, the upper mounting stud and retaining nut would have been on the pump when painted (this often leaves a shadow and bare metal under the tag. Have seen them painted with the cap installed and without.  End of the pipe where the return line goes would  not have been painted originally

An original example

2- Agree that the AC pump was painted as a unit after assembly  - some original examples

3- Do each of your exhaust lacks have at least one ear (each bolt) bent over and in contact with the bolt? Often owners don't finish with this detail

4- Not required but you could have provided a little engine paint overspray (a little or allot) on the carb spacer

An original example (car had 1200 miles)

Other than what has been mentioned already, the hardware for the p/s pump to rear of the bracket should be a smaller thick washer and a locking nut.  Looks like the bracket has been spread apart in that area also.  Which is why a larger washer was used?

The oil pressure sending unit is usually rotated a little to the right, the assembly manual actually shows some detail of this.

You guys are great!  Thanks for your time.  I have not bent a tab over on the exhaust bolt locks because I have not decided if I will use these with RampLok bolts or not.  The car came with the locks but if I go with them, I will have to be constantly explaining/proving WHY my 66 don't have the RampLok bolts since that's what was used at that time.

I was afraid the P/S line was gonna hit the OP sender.  Glad it tilts more rearward. Avoids the problem.
I have the correct thick washer and locknut.  I will change it out.  I think the P/S pump mount bolts on front should be the grade 8 slotted type with a washer instead of integral washer type.

The power steering pump shown as an example is incorrect for a Mustang. It will work on a Mustang however, the correct pump for a Mustang has the return hose pointing downward toward the floor. I think the example pump shown here was used on big body Ford cars. When I judge Mustangs and see that pump used I deduct points.

The purpose of the example was to show how the tag and other details were painted originally ;)

Jeff I realize that you only using that pump as a example but their are others that would look at that pump and think it was correct for a Mustang. Vendors sell those pumps as being correct for Mustangs and they're not.

Just asking, but shouldn't the valve cover bolts be painted on a painted valve cover engine?

I think only 2 VC bolts get painted on each side.

Bryan,

Do you have a pic of the front of the engine?  I'd like to see the detailing on the AC Clutch if possible...Not sure it is supposed to be all black or not.

Thanks

It will also depend on which type of clutch was used  ;). Bob
