Is this an original starter?
« on: April 24, 2020, 04:37:16 PM »
Wondering if this is an original starter or not. Can't see any markings on the outer case at all.
Part number C7AF-11131-A stamped inside the drive end housing. According to the ID section this might be an original??

It has REBUILT stamped on the bearing so it's been out of the car.

This starter has been in the car since '79.

No it is not original to your 69 CJ Cougar. When starters are rebuilt reconditioned parts are taken from a pile so it is uncommon for all of the same parts to get back on the starter. This is not the original starter to the car but built with a conglomeration of parts. The nose is the correct style and so is the band  . Starting approximately in the 68 production year the cases were metal stamped with the engineering number. Earlier versions were ink stamped on a blank barrel case. Since you said you could not see any numbers I assume that it is one of the earlier cases. Also many that do have metal stamped numbers may not be the correct ones that correspond with the application given the switching of refurbish parts during the rebuild process. I can't see the bendix cover to tell if it is correct or not for your CJ application. The correct metal stamped barrel case is the hardest part to find because it is unique to that one application. The other parts were shared across other applications.

The bendix cover looks like it is from a 65-early 66 model.

Like original with correct details for different years and applications? Not that I'm aware of. Often owners/builders either have originals from the car rebuilt or they have to make one up from multiple donors or get lucky with over the counter rebuilts or from places like Ebay or Mustang forum web sites and the like. Your would have an engineering number, the word AUTOLITE and a date as shown in a number of other threads on the site focused on the starter subject

Check #37 here so you can see an example of what the stampings are that you are looking for.  Most likely you have a Motorcraft case..unless you are lucky.
