fuel tank drain plug
« on: April 21, 2020, 12:45:45 PM »
When did Ford add the drain plug to the fuel tanks? My 65, built in Feb, does not have a drain plug. Researching this what I find is everything mentioning the drain plug. Was there a change over during the year?

Drain plugs were used 65-68 and it was either in 69 or 70 when tanks without them started being used in production.

If your 65 doesn't have a drain plug, it's a replacement.  Ford serviced them like that too, even though they didn't match what was installed on the assembly line.

+1 . Early 69 production had drain plugs the transition to without was later 69 up .

My tank has the following part number stenciled on it. C5ZZ-9002-D. Is this a Ford replacement number?

The fact that it has a stenciled number on it suggests that it was replaced with a service replacement unit

On later versions a stenciled date can be found also during some eras

Keep in mind any part number prefix with a trailing 'Z' is a replacement part number, not an engineering part number.  There wouldn't have been any 'ZZ' markings/tags from the assembly plant on a Mustang.
