What would be the correct San Jose radiator for a 200 engine and C4 trans.  Which numbers would need to be on top if the Mustang was manufactured January 1966.  Would like to find a radiator from Oct-Dec 1965

The radiator based on the study would have W-MO and the date stamped in the top tank and a ID tag applied to the passenger side radiator strap. Looking at other 6 cylinder automatic examples without AC or thermactor (just guessing on the last two since you didn't mention them)  I found of C6ZE-A2. Picture of that ID tag is shown in the Unrestored Picture thread.



Unfortunately this example is from a possible June 66 built car so can't be certain the coding was the same 6 months or so earlier but nothing I've seen so far shows that the ID number changed for applications during 66 production.Not as much research has been done on 6 cylinder cars, a fact that I'm sure you have discovered. In turn less examples and pictures out there. Note that there are some decade old list of ID codes roaming around. IMHO not all are completely accurate and I would not rely on them solely

There is a radiator on eBay that I'm thinking of purchasing.  The radiator might be too early for my January 11 1966 Mustang.   The radiator will need to be re-cored

Agreed looks way too early in date and style of top tank. Since it needs recoring (another challenge) the final cost might be too much to use it just as a usable place keeper until you find a more correct one.

How about this radiator on eBay.  It has a side stamp C6ZE-8005 A1 5MB  Which is Dec 1965.  I just don't think this can be a San Jose radiator, but more like a Metuchen Ford Factory radiator.

Yes your correct that is the version typically found on NJ and Dearborn cars. What it does provide is a clue as to what the provider of the radiator and Ford was using at the time (Dec 65) as an identifying code for the application. The challenge for you moving forward would be to fins a correctly dated western Modine (W-MO on the top tank with date). And unfortunately the ID tag possibly be missing and no one I know of has or is making a reproduction of that label. Guess you could make one but the letters are pretty large and likely expensive if you could find that size and font

NPD sells one, that is where I got mine from. I can't guarantee how exact it is however. BTW, mine is a San Jose Convertible, Dec. 1, 65. 200, auto, with smog so should be same radiator as yours I believe.

Can you show us more pictures of your Dec 1965 San Jose Radiator.  Mostly the top portion. How many fins/inch does your radiator have.

Sorry, the guts of my radiator are not original. I got one that had the appearance of the original, I was told it was the same company that used to be Modine, but without the W-MO and date. I have yet to change the top but it is the same size, but that won't answer your question, sorry.

If I ever find a OEM radiator that I'm looking for, then I will probably still need to re-core it.

Ah, I assumed being built in San Jose it would have come with smog and required the D. I forget some cars built in San Jose weren't necessarily sold in the California market.

I'm about to paint the radiator.  For now I decided to go with the tag on top until I find a correct date radiator...

I have a Eastwood Gloss rattle paint that I'm thinking of using.  Eastwood also carries the Satin rattle paint.  Which would be more correct to use.

I always use the gloss to replicate what was originally applied - Likely a black lacquer

Through heat cycles it will naturally loose much of all (depending on how and how much you use the car) of the gloss

Remember to only apply just enough to cover. More paint = less heat transfer
