65 Fastback Parking Brake Cable Bracket Finish
« on: March 31, 2020, 12:35:59 AM »
I’m working on the parking brake on a 1965 Fastback (Feb ’65, C-code, San Jose). What is the original finish on the cable brackets? On mine, the first two appear to have a natural finish – no coating of any kind that I can find. These two brackets are the Insulator Bracket on the lower firewall where the cable first comes through (couldn’t find a Ford p/n) and the Bracket on the transmission hoop (Ford p/n 2A610). The rest of the brackets farther back seem like they were painted black, though most of the paint is now missing. Is this correct?

For the bolt on bracket just  below the steering column looked through a bunch of pictures and of course found my share of rusty ones and others that were just too dirty to tell. Did come up with one example that appears to be black and another that had been unbolted and where the bolt head and washer protected the surface it appears black on the surface.

No good pictures to indicate the next bracket attached to the transmission cross member though sure others will offer their observations on this one and the others. Just trying to help

As far as the rear most (both sides of the frame rail) rearward brackets they were painted semi-gloss black though some have been found without paint.

Some pictures from using the search popped up in the thread below

Thx Jeff, I thought I'd searched the site extensively, but didn't think to look for "e brake". (The search engine doesn't like single letters!)

I found a source for the second bracket (the one near the transmission frame hoop) on the Tony Branda website (Part #: PBCB1). Their part says it has a "gold di-chromate finish". I didn't see a hint of gold color on my bracket, but maybe I just hit it too hard with the wire wheel. I don't want to leave it bare metal, so I'll probably paint it black as well.

Perhaps I shouldn't be this detail oriented regarding the originality of my car as it was resurrected from a nearly totaled car in the 80's and shoddily rebuilt using things like sheet-metal screws where bolts should be, Lowes-grade hardware, etc. I knew very little about cars and Mustangs in '84, but this car was shiny and cheap, and I was seduced. Unfortunately, the more I learned about Mustangs, the less I liked mine. I've continued to upgrade it over the years so that I'm quite happy with it now, but in retrospect would have spent far less money by beginning with a better example.

I really identified with your signature phrase. Although I'm not shooting for concours, if I'm going to do it, I might as well do it right.

Like any computer you need to feed it terms and combinations - often different ones or start with many then narrow the search from there.  If it would only be able to read your mind or translate a picture of an area or part :)  But that is beyond the current abilities so we're left with what we have to work with

If not for your project we always need to focus on the facts since it will help others in their efforts as they reread these threads in the future. As mentioned hopefully others, when they have time will add their experience and observations to the thread

It's more a case of terminology. What you would call a bracket might be called a support by others. It's not easy to figure out what to call something.

Charles did remind me that on the rear brackets - the ones on the outer side of the frame were natural and the ones installed on the inner side of the frame were semi-gloss black. Thanks

There was at least one prior thread where we looked it that and I had forgotten and in reviewing pictures quickly (too quickly) I didn't look to see which ones were located where

Important thing is the correct information

Thx Guys!

To summarize:
There are five brackets/supports on the ’65 parking brake (This is the early version that passes between the rear floor and the frame rail). The “name” shown in the list below is as it appears in the ’65 Ford Mustang Service Manual – Page 2-28, Fig. 27.

1)   Ford p/n TBD (No p/n number in the Service Manual.)
Name: “Insulator Bracket”
Qty:1
Location: Bolts to the firewall where the parking brake cable passes from the cabin into the engine compartment.
Finish: Natural

2)   Ford p/n 2A610
Name: “Bracket”
Qty:1
Location: Bolts to the front of the transmission tunnel hoop – left side.
Finish: Natural

3)   Ford p/n TBD (No p/n number in the Service Manual.)
Name: “Under Body Bracket”
Qty:2
Location: Welded to both sides of the transmission tunnel.
Finish: Painted with the floor.

4)   Ford p/n 2A720 – L.H.; 2649 – R.H.
Name: “Anchor Bracket”
Qty:2
Location: Bolts to inside of rear frame near where the parking cable enters the sheet-metal tunnel above the frame rail and below the floor.
Finish: Black semi-gloss paint

5)   Ford p/n 2860
Name:  “Retaining Hook”
Qty: 2
Location: Bolts to outside of rear frame near where the parking cable exits the sheet-metal tunnel above the frame rail and below the floor.
Finish: Natural

Pleases correct this as appropriate.

Do the “Natural” pieces have any coating to deter corrosion? Would a zinc electroplate be appropriate?

Read "Phosphating 101" in the "Processes, Products and Techniques" section, replies number 8 and 10.

No IMHO in these examples

Thx for the pointer, Jim. And for your comment Jeff. I had been following the "Phosphating 101" thread and found it very interesting. I just wasn't sure it that was the correct finish for these parking brake brackets.

So is the consensus that the manganese phosphate coating is correct - or at least acceptable for these parking brake brackets? If not, what is appropriate?

Thx!

Couple pics of the outer brackets.  These were originals restored, blasted/tumbled.  Original fasteners re-plated.
