Convertible Top Color
« on: March 23, 2020, 07:12:43 PM »
I have a 1965 convertible mustang, San Jose with an August build date.  I have the original build sheet and window sticker sSee pictures).  Can any tell me what the original color of the top would have been.  I am the third owner and I bought this back in the 80's with a blue top (see picture).  Also any information you can give me regarding the build sheet would be appreciated.

The "1965 Only" Ford Master Parts Catalog (printed January 1964) notes that "Before 8/17/1964", Black, White and Blue Tops were available, but "After 8/17/1964", only Black, White and Tan Tops were available as Options. The Mustang Sales Brochure printed 4/65, seems to support that, listing only the Black, White and Tan Tops as Options.

Hope this helps.

Very very rare to find a San Jose build sheet still in a car. Nice find

Best guess based on studies and research done by others would be a black power top

The 66 discussion ("decode buildsheet" found it for me) might be a place to start. Only a little over 200posts to read through ;)

I came up with the same conclusion. In addition, the window sticker would have listed the top color "variation", plus the order sheet would have a special six diget order number starting with 71 (like 711234) somewhere.
You got 50 plus years of "what happened" to contend with.

Top type "1" from the build sheet is "Black Power" as shown in the "65 Ford Mustang Illustrated Facts Book".

Thanks for your feedback everyone.  I see that a blue top was offered on 66's.  Any chance San Jose would have put the blue 66 top on my car since it was an August build?  According to my build sheet I see now that it was scheduled for a black power top (1).  Would the bill sheet ever be ignored or could a change be made without changing the build sheet.  We are talking the San Jose plant.

I saw the blue top option on a 1966 Ford passenger vehicle order card.  Blue power with plastic glass was code Y and Blue with glass was code 5.

Believe you may be looking at the passenger car order card or form.  Looking at a punch card there is no separate section for each body style or model though enter would only be what was available  and what is shown on the card had to represent all models in the Ford line. Blue was apparently available on something like full size Fords and maybe Fairlanes

Here is the convertible top section of a 66 Mustang order form

Just so as not to leave you "hanging", for 1966, the Full Size Fords, Fairlanes and T-Birds offered a Blue Top, but the Mustangs only Black or White. Attached is from the Soft Trim Section of the 1960-68 MPC.

Where did you find the buildsheet at? I don’t think I’ve seen one out of San Jose before.

The top on the car does not appear to be original either.  The rear bow finisher is the turnover style instead of 2 piece plastic.

Here's a reproduction '65 order sheet.  Your 'TOPS' section on the build sheet corresponds to the order sheet code of '1', which is black power top.
