67-70 Rear License Plate Lamp Shield
« on: March 10, 2020, 01:01:47 AM »
After the subject came up again figured it would not hurt to have a sole designated thread on the subject. The purpose of the shield was to block the license plate light from shinning through the gap above the rear bumper and the taillight panel and illuminating the bottom of the gas cap and surface of the taillight panel it seems. At one time we suspected that it was a shield to try and seal out any spilled fuel from traveling downward and into the license plate light. This may have been a secondary benefit but apparently (by the official name for the piece) not its main purpose

None of these were used in 65-66/ Guess the lip of the taillight panel on these years blocked out the light while the later designs didn't.

Shields were cut from fiber impregnated rubber sheets. Reproductions are available. Just do a search and a for sale ad will be found on this site.

1- Comparison picture of the two versions covered in this thread.

2- reason there are two versions. The earlier 67-8 shields have cutouts for the rear bumper guard upper attachment points. 68 San Jose example

3- Here is what can be seen on a 67 with one installed. Shield bends over and behind the rear bumper and license plate light body. 67 San Jose example

4- Installation of a shield on a 69 with bumper removed

5- Close up of the attaching hardware for a 69 San Jose

6- And an example of one installed on a 70. In this case a 70 Dearborn example and an attempt to show the attaching hardware.

Will break some originals out and take some close up pictures to show the surface make up and other details.

The rubber industry term for this fiber impregnated rubber is "masticated rubber."

I purchased mine from Muscle Car Research LLC and it's really an accurate piece.

Have found a few 67 San Jose examples where pan head screws were used though can confirm that the vast majority I have found have used the self tapping wide washer style Phillips head screws as listed above

Here we go again.
1967, 68 and 69 called out: 352361-S100 8-18X1/2RND/WSHR 13/32, XREC, TPG, SST - SCREW, ROUND/WASHER, PHLPS, TPG
Ref Assembly manuals: N7-8940, N8-8940, N9-940, the screw is shown on page 162 of AMK Ford Fasteners.
1970 called out 42366-S40   8-18X1/2HH, REC, FLNG 11/32, TPG, 1/4HEX, BLUNT TIP -   SCREW, HEX, REC, FLNG, TPG, BLUNT
Ref Assembly manual N0-940, the screw is shown on page 151 of AMK Ford Fasteners.
What is show in any MPC is a fastener that is more common in a dealers service inventory. It may or may not be what was originally installed, in many cases it is NOT.
Pictures show what the assembly line may have used (elapsed time is a factor), or what was used in a paint shop.

Yes that was the purpose of the picture. Add a little text - sorry wanted to post a quick response since I had been out much of a day looking at a Boss 9
