Original Trunk Mats
« on: February 26, 2020, 03:04:24 AM »
Wanted to put together some photos and some quick descriptions on the versions of original trunk mats that are out there and show the differences.  Had some time last month with David Davis, Jack Brooks, and Jim Woods to lay these all out and come up with what we think is correct based on notes we have and cars these came out of.  If anyone has any additional comments would like to hear or compare with original trunk mats in cars that we know are correct.

For 1969/1970 came up with these six versions.  The main difference is cars with CA emissions had a larger size cut hole in the trunk mat to accommodate the larger filler neck, otherwise there would only be three versions:

1969/1970 Non Fold Down Seat
1969/1970 Fold Down Seat
1969/1970 Coupe convertible

1970 Non Fold Down Seat - CA Emissions
1970 Fold Down Seat - CA Emissions
1970 Coupe/Convertible - CA Emissions

Marcus, since there are 6 versions and you only have 5 pictures does that mean that 70 fold down with CA emission would be the same as the 69 with the exception of the size of the gas filler neck hole?

Bob...yes...exactly.  This is all I could find laying around the shop so just had these photos handy.  But you can see the differences between body style and folding and non folding back seat.
One size does not fit all.

Great info Marcus.
I was hoping to see 69 fold down no emissions?
So all plants had speckled mats then, no plaids for 69?
What's with the additional sideways cut at the filler neck area?
Sure does compromise the integrity of the mat.

Hi have an original fold down non emission mat! I will have to lay it out when I get the chance and get a full picture.

The cuts you are asking about are to let the mat lay flat behind the sheet metal bracket for the trunk latch to mount.

Why not ? :D  Just teasing.  I thought a little clarification was in order for those reading who may not understand.  Thanks for posting the comparison pictures.

Well the idea here is to get this into an article for future reference....but before that happens really wanted to see and hear what others have seen.  Always good to have multiple sources

Posted these earlier  threads showing some of the different backing material and other details

Comparing backing material used through the 67-70 period for trunk mats

Just a thought but if your doing an article on mats you might want to consider the trunk boards also as well as the drivers side filler board examples and details

Understand that there is always something else related that you can add to these publications but sometimes other supporting details or items makes sense and a more complete package since doing one will almost automatically produce questions about the related subjects

Good luck with the article. Have three or four waiting for attention but need to catch up on the running changes facts and threads first and have had allot of people looking for cars since the first of the year

Thanks Jeff....good input.
Whenever I write about something I always try to make sure I have multiple original examples for photos etc.  The trunk boards could be a good one but also leads to discussions about trunk underlayment.
Will see what makes most sense when I get to that point.  Still working on the suspension guide right now as well.

Soooo.... what does the Mustang have along the right-hand side that a Cougar does not?  Looks like half of your mat is missing!

Apparently I only have a back-side pic of my trunk mat.  '70 Cougar with CA Emissions, fwiw.

Plus yours (Cougar) is made from a different material  :)
