69 Fiberglass end caps
« on: December 20, 2010, 10:29:45 AM »
You can teach old dogs new tricks.  I've pulled apart dozens of 69 mach Is, but this last one I pulled apart had fiberglass factory end caps on it.  Its a 69 San Jose R code with a 112xxx VIN number. Part number on the end caps was C9ZB-6328010-C and 11-C.  Never seen a set before. You learn something new everyday.

I believe this was a early production part, as my dearborn and San Jose built mach 1s have the fiberglass/plastic quarter extensions. Both of these cars are early cars. I believe all the replacement extensions were pot metal. Someone else on here may know the cut off date and why they changed it.

Yes you run across a pair or sometimes just one of the pair made of the plastic stuff. Apparently there were issues or possibly a cost thing (but bet it was an issue with finish and fit) that they addressed mid (of so) year.

Don't know anyone that has figured or when the change happened (at all three plants and not aware of any documentation describing the change over.

Of course Judges should not be tapping on these in any case to determine what they are made of ;)

Our 69 Mach 1 has one fiberglass and one pot metal. It's the original pcs. It's been in my wifes family 41 yrs in Jan. 2011. The build date was Monday,February 24, 1969 and is a NJ Mach 1. I'm wondering why 1 would be fiberglass and 1 is pot metal?...Any thoughts?

This has been reported allot - from various assembly plants. Since this appears not to have been a really big issue (like some of the other big problems- it appears that they just used up the old stock while transitioning to the new so they may have  mixed and matched the end caps for a time
