Correct Fresh Air/Emergency Brake Control Bolts
« on: January 31, 2020, 12:09:16 AM »
I am trying to figure out which fresh air/emergency brake control mount bolts are correct for my three mustangs.  I have a 1965 coupe, July Dearborn car, a 1965 Convertible, June Dearborn car, and a 1966 Fastback hipo, August car. I have pictured the three options I have to choose from. The first pair at the bottom has Philips head with course threads, the middle pair has Philips with fine threads and the pair at the top has SEMS head markings with fine threads. Which of these options are correct for my three mustangs. Thanks for the help.

Have you looked in the Library Section of this forum? There's a post titled "Mustang Hardware Spreadsheet 64-66". It lists what engineering specified for use on Mustangs.
Running changes, assembly line substitutes and 50 years of wear and tear are not included.

So if I understand correctly you have three pairs of bolts and three cars

- June 65 Dearborn
- July 65 Dearborn
- August 65 Dearborn?

Bolts
- Philips head with course threads
- Philips with fine threads
- SEMS head markings with fine threads

Correct. The fine thread with "SEMS" head markings are on my June Dearborn 65 coupe which has been in my family since new. A long the way I might have added these bolts since I did a lot of work on the car in the early 1980's. I don't remember changing them from the Philips style but I would be surprised if I did. My July 65 Dearborn, convertible and August 66 fastback currently are disassemble under restoration in my shop. I did not label the correct bolts that came off the parking brake/fresh air mounting bracket. But in my collection of parts I have several sets of the fine thread and course thread Philips screws. The AMK hardware kit uses the fine thread Philips for the 65-66. And If I read it right the spread sheet in the Library indicates that the fine thread Philips is what is correct for the 65-66. So, unless there is more information, that is what I will use on all three cars.

From my research:
The middle pair is Ford p/n 50831-S8 (5/16-24X3/4 Pan head, Phillips drive, external tooth lock washer) which is the correct screw for all three of your parking brake handle brackets (includes the LH vent handle bracket) to the lower dash.
The bottom pair are used on 67 and 68 Mustangs for the parking brake handle to the dash as Ford p/n 379949-S2, and as 379949-S36 for the rear bumper guards - not a 64-66 hardware item.
Without more dimensions on the upper pair, the closest I came was for the fan clutch to the water pump and pulley for 64-66 260/289 and 67 390 engines.

Ok, Thanks. Is the correct finish for these bolts silver zinc?

Yes. Also called clear zinc.
Technically, they are "machine screws". Don't ask why. It's an ongoing controversy.
