Unknown wire connection- SJ 65 FB
« on: January 11, 2020, 11:24:52 AM »
Been looking at wiring diagrams for the past two days and can’t seem to find this wire. It appears to be coming from the engine gauge harness, has a female end and a red stripe. Nothing was connected to it before I started tearing down some of the car. Any ideas? I thought maybe it might be for the shifter light indicator on an automatic transmission but not sure. Car was a 4 speed then converted to an automatic and is going back to a 4 speed.

Pretty sure that's for the courtesy light at the back of the console.

If I recall correctly the color pattern is for interior lights and also consider that not all female connections in the main wire loom are not used on all cars. Believe PraireBronze is correct and that is often used for the console feed

It did originally come with a full length console and the wires are still there by the shifter and the lights did work. Tried tracing the harness but it disappears behind the firewall pad and goes up. Not sure where it goes or how it is wired.

Yeah I took the carpet out to see where it was going and it went behind the firewall pad and up near the engine guage harness I suppose I can look behind the dash and see if I can see if coming out as I have the instrument cluster out...

Found where the harness is connected. Appears to be an original harness. That one wire in question is still hanging out doing nothing so maybe that is it’s job?

Ahhh...what threw me was the lack of harness tape and the location: the passenger side of the engine gauge feed harness plug that goes into the firewall.  That female plug is for the PRNDL lamp, which is only used if you have an automagic transmission.

Like this example from around the same time - same plant though they should all be pretty much to the same on this details

This is how my shifter light was wired. Was also tied into the rally pac for some unknown reason. Needless to say this is going in the garbage  since I don’t need it anymore.
