1968 San Jose GT 390 Fastback Deluxe Interior Door Paint

I did some searches and did not find anything specific for my year and model. Looking to confirm the line that transitions between body color and interior color. My interior is deluxe.

Is this photo correct? Whoever painted my car last the interior color was carried through all the way out to the exterior door skin all the way around. I have been told that the interior door panel paint only covers the inner door panel up to the edge if the inner skin and that the jam on the door gets body color. I want to make sure that my painter has the correct info as they have painted some Mustangs differently based on customer requests. They have not done concours Mustangs before. I may have mentioned this before.

No that is not correct. The body color should be under the door panel and the paint cut off is inside the bottom weather strip retainer. Here is a picture of our 68 GT 350 project.

Great thanks. So does the whole door get body color first and the the interior color get sprayed on top? Also what inert paint are you using?

Guess we've not posted before the lower door finish for a 68 San Jose though typically they are the same as 67 as shown in those threads and the undercarriage restoration article

As Marty reported like the other interior panels (including doors since they were attached to the car) the interior was painted with color first then those surfaces were masked. Often the paint on the bottom of the door was light and showed poor coverage - bare metal in a fair number of examples.

Some original examples Tried to get at least one that represents your cars coloring :) Good to have a fair number of pictures to choose from


Much more body color in the proper areas than interior color on the bottom of this one. Note no primer was applied




Some times (not usually) the masking edge reached out to just short of the weather strip retainer (inside edge) and sometimes it was further away that the top picture shows.


The Dark Charcoal metallic application is discussed in more than a dozen threads. Most of us use a couple of light full coats of your choice of semi-gloss black over freshly stripped metal (some like a little primer) followed by a couple of light - on the dry side- over coats of the Charcoal . It can be a little transparent (read allot of clear) Too much paint and you'll fill the grain and leave the finish glossy

Last I used I got from Auto Color Library Got the PPG that was available at that time. Before that I got PPG Lacquer but had to go across sate lines for that

I was told it had rust in all the typical places for a car that sat outside. The owner that had it when the restoration started died so no photos exist. Members of the local mustang club that remembers it said the floor was rusty. When I got it all the metal work was done so there is no rust now.

I am getting close to painting all of my interior parts and I just want to confirm that all of the interior parts that get painted the charcoal metallic paint. My understanding is the following parts all get the same paint.

Dash, Ashtray, glovebox, interior doors, all rear fastback panels, trap door & steering column.

Couple of questions as per attached photos.

1. Should the doors have red oxide painted first. Remnants of the red oxide on my doors. So far just using chemical stripper to remove the old/original paint
2. All of the steering parts that get painted attached
3. Paint I am planning to use (Is there a special paint to be used on the fibreglass panels or did the factory use the same paint on all interior parts metal and otherwise

Door would have been sprayed with red oxide so nooks and corners didn't get much paint on the inside and over the bottom edge was not well covered but on a few they were better. Of course the exterior would have received the light grey surface over the top of the red oxide

No additive or anything special for the "plastic pieces" just remember on all of the surfaces with a grain not to put on too much paint so that the grain is diminished

Also remember that the glove box and hinge was painted while attached to the dash panel

Sure there are some additional details I'm over looking at the moment

Thanks Jeff. I am hoping to be able to media blast my rear panels at very low psi. I may do the same with my doors if I can't get the grain perfectly clean.

I will have to decide if I am going to do anything with the inside of my doors. I have not cleaned them up yet, but will do so after the outside is cleaned up. FYI there is no rust inside the doors.

Also did the factory use all of that dum/dum sealer inside the door or was it done by whoever restored the car. There are literally pounds of it on the door panels.

Also it looks like the red oxide was only used on the front fender side of the door and inside the shell. I have not seen any evidence of primer on the rest of the door interior panel
