66 Side Scoop Washer - passenger panel

Hello,

Bottom Line: what size washers should I use of the one bottom scoop rivet?
                    how do I get the passenger interior panel trim out?

I got some original rear seat belts and was in the process of installing them.  I decided that while I'm at it I'll put the washers in the bottom front of each scoop.  The driver's side panel was easy to remove.  The passenger has that latch and I can't get the third screw out because the panel is covering it and the shelby quarter window trim is riveted in (as far as I can tell).  How do I get that third screw out or do I need to screw out all the rivets?  It seems like a lot to do this, but it's winter and the car's not going too far.

Okay, so I was able to pull the panel away enough to be able to use a dremel and a mirror.  It the rivet finally came off. 

So...can anybody tell me what size washer and rivet to use?  Is the rive the same as the others?

Here's how it came out.  I'm happy with the size of the washer but the rivet looks a bit stubby.  I did one outside of the car and the length looked good but I'm not happy with it.  I guess I'm going to drill this one out and try again.

You may be limited to washers made for poprivets. They have an inside diameter that matches the outside diameter of the rivet, and that is different than a standard 1/8 or 3/16 dia washer.

Will measure my tomorrow. The washers were typically placed on the top and the bottom (forward most ) as mentioned in the thread. I'm going to merger your question to that older thread tomorrow to keep these related subject all together. Looking at the pictures in the other thread should help with the "too long/short/stubby" possibility. Have hundreds more pictures of originals but don't think they will be needed

As Jim mentioned you only have a couple of choices but as mentioned will measure some originals tomorrow so that the information is in the thread for others

Thanks Jeff,  top and bottom?  Darn, I only did the bottom.  I guess I'll have to pull it all apart again.  Bummer.  I used a 1/8 rivet with the rivet washer.  Please let me know if what you measure Jeff.  Thanks!

Yes top and bottom :)





Got lucky and had access (couple at home and one near by) to a few unrestored 66's today

All the rivet washers measured out to 3/8's

Think for reproducing the original look both are important and since the owner typically has the original holes already drilled that should be easy to determine. And as you wrote above there are are few choices. Now choosing the correct length to give you the desired "crushed" look is another dimension and part of the puzzle :)

Here's my opportunity to contribute from my experience.  The image you see of my car (green) is a 3/16" rivet with the washer.  That seems to closely match the images of the original rivets.  The washer shown in that photo is a 1/2" standard washer (not a rivet specific washer).  You can see that the stubby rivet doesn't match the other rivets used on my car so I moved to a 1/16's rivet and it matches the others you see.

I did a 3/16" rivet twice with the same stubby (original looking) result.  The 1/16" comes out with the longer finish but it matches all the others on my car so I'm going with that. 

If you use 3/16" rivets and 3/16" rivet washers with a 3/8" diameter I think you can reproduce the look of the originals. 

Thank you all for your help.  Tomorrow I'm going to do the tops of the scoops.

Yes you'll need (not going to remove an original at the moment ;) estimate the length by taking the thickness of the scoop and sheet metal then adding for the short section that mushrooms when tightened. Will likely not be of much help but here is a shot of the mounting hardware (side scoops and duct rivets) from a Shelby kit from the period
