Trunk drop off holes
« on: December 15, 2019, 04:19:01 PM »
The trunk drop off on my 65 has 3 holes in it. One is toward the rear which I think is for the wires to the back up lights. My question is the 2 holes toward the front. One is round and then a square hole above it. What are these 2 holes for and what goes in them?

The 67-8 style turn-downs have been used.

If on a 65/66 then a 67-70 style drop off has been used by someone during a repair.

Are there correct full trunk floors available for '65?  Mine were replaced back in the day with incorrect ones.

According to the 4 different Mustang supply catalogs that I have this part is listed as 64-70. Nothing specific for year 65. So what would be correct for 65? Which holes belong and which don't? What is needed to correct this? Anyone have  a picture?

Would be best for someone to post some pics of turn-downs from a Feb Dearborn 65 car.

Be very cautious when using parts vendor catalogs in determining what is right or wrong.  Sometimes, as in this case, it's a 'fits' description rather than period correct.

Modifying the ones installed might be possible.  If your car has backup lights, then it wouldn't have the hole to the rear.  If it did, then the hole would be smaller for the smaller wiring rubber grommets used in 65-66.

The square hole above the front larger hole would have to be filled.

Hi Charles,

Are you aware of any differences between the plants or intra-model-year changes for the trunk drop offs in 65?  If not I have a nice clear picture of a factory trunk drop-off of a late July 1965 Metuchen build (no backup lamps).

I'm not aware, but best to focus on Dearborn in case there are differences.

Completely agree - best not to confuse things in that case.

From what all you guys are saying the 2 holes on the right should no be there on a 65. So I should fill them in to make this more period correct? If these holes were used for 67-68 what exactly went thru them? just curious.

The forward holes (one small square and a larger round) were for the rubber moisture weep valve used on 67-70 Mustang. The 65/66 had a different shaped long and narrow rubber valve mounted on the bottom side of the drop off area.
