1965 Styled wheels on 1966
« on: December 10, 2019, 08:00:13 PM »
I have read that some early 66 Mustangs left the factory with 65 styled steel wheels on them. What is the latest 1965 production date (for 66 model year production)  that anyone has noted this happened ?

I can't tell you the latest build date of 66 Models that I have observed with 1965 (C5ZZ) wheels, but here is what I can offer :

1) The 1966 Ford Accessory Catalog (Accessory Catalogs were usually printed just before the new Model Year), shows only the C5ZZ-1007-B (Grey=Gold paint in cavaties) Styled Steel Wheel.

2)  The 1966 Ford Parts and Accessories Catalog (Printed January 1966) shows the same.

3)  However, the November 1965 Ford List Price Book shows the C6ZZ-1007-A Styled Steel Wheel as a Service Part as well as the C5ZZ -A and -B. This would seem to imply that the Factory had switched to the C6ZZ wheel by November 1, 1965. The best indication though, is what has been observed. Hopefully, someone who has the change-over date documented will chime in.

My Oct 18, 1965 San Jose build has the 66 Style Steel wheels, including the spare. The original owner has confirmed they were factory. The spare has never been used (abused, yes). Note that that the edge is smooth, no "scallops".

Jim and Jim : Thank you both for your Replies. Looks like this starts to narrow things down, at least for the SJ Plant, to between September 28, 1965 and October 18, 1965. Do both of your wheels appear to have the "Charcoal Grey" paint in the "cavities", or the "Grey-Gold" paint as the MPC seems to indicate ?

Thanks again for your input.

I wish I could give you a firm answer on this but I am away from the car.  I do have this picture, which looks gray to me but may not be conclusive because it isn't a great image.
